Maria Karystianou: Scathing statement against “Proto Thema
Maria Karystianou accused Proto Thema of systematic media attacks using inaccuracies and avoiding coverage of triangular relationships between banks, servicers, and funds affecting citizens.
Maria Karystianou has launched a scathing media criticism in a Facebook post, exposing how Proto Thema has been covering developments within “ELPIDA for Democracy” and revealing the systematic attack being waged against her by mainstream media outlets using inaccuracies and ambiguities.
In her post, Karystianou refers to yet another “feature” by Proto Thema, which has been republished in anti-ELPIDA media, concerning the alleged departure of an individual. This person is presented as a supposed member of the Movement’s leadership, when in reality they have no involvement whatsoever in its activities.
Meanwhile, Proto Thema, despite being asked in writing immediately after the publication to disclose the specific names of those who signed the statement attributed to the Movement’s former Press Office, neither sent nor published the names. It also failed to publish the immediate comment from a member of the Political Council, who raised precisely the question of why the names of those signing this anonymous statement were not being disclosed.
Silence on the triangular relationships between banks and funds
Particularly striking is the absence of any substantive reference by Proto Thema and other anti-ELPIDA media to the serious issues raised at the Movement’s event on July 26, 2026. The event concerned the triangular relationships between banks, servicers, and funds. Conspicuously absent from that event, both by name and in their capacity, were then-members of the Movement.
The questions being posed publicly, primarily to Proto Thema but also to other media outlets that chose silence, are specific. Why are they not dealing with the major issue of the actions and connections between banks, servicers, and funds? An issue that affects a multitude of citizens and has led to the loss of homes for so many of our fellow citizens.
And most importantly, what is Proto Thema‘s and its publisher’s experience with managing any loan obligations of their own? They are publicly called upon, in the context of transparency and the justified interest of public opinion, to make public the course of any loans concerning the media outlet and its publisher.
Society has the right to know whether a media outlet, which must operate with impartiality, objectivity, and without dependencies, has received favorable or unfavorable treatment for any loans it may have, on terms different or not from those applied to millions of Greek citizens.
The time has come for everything to be brought to light. For the questions to be answered. And to reveal why the system is ruthlessly baring its teeth at the only Hope.
