Police in Lasithi arrested a man from Albania who is alleged to have stolen €11,000 from his Egyptian roommate. The theft took place in a residence in Elounda where the Albanian and two Egyptians, who also work together at a local construction site, live.

According to information from patris.gr, the Egyptian reported the loss of the money, which he had hidden in his home, on Tuesday (March 24). Meanwhile, the Albanian claimed that about €400 had also been stolen from him, suggesting it was a burglary since the house door had been forced open.

During the preliminary investigation, the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) discovered that the Albanian had returned unsuspectingly to the house, claiming he had forgotten something. Analysis of security camera footage revealed that the theft was not committed by an external perpetrator but by the roommate himself.

It is believed that the suspect had identified where the Egyptian hid the money and took advantage of the opportunity to steal it. Approximately €8,000 were found in his possession and were returned to their lawful owner. The Albanian reportedly stated that he had “invested” the money in gambling.
