Knife-Wielding Protester Confronts Steyer at LA Rally
Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer was confronted by knife-wielding protesters at a Los Angeles campaign event where he had appealed to Black voters, with activists criticizing Democratic outreach efforts.
The incident unfolded last Saturday at ORA Cafe in Leimert Park, where Steyer had addressed a gathering of black voters, telling them they are owed a “gigantic debt” and represent the moral conscience of America. The scene deteriorated rapidly when agitators arrived at the venue.
A Steyer campaign spokesperson confirmed the hostile encounter, stating that staff escorted the gubernatorial candidate to his vehicle in an alleyway after the event concluded. One protester had drawn a knife on campaign personnel, prompting staff to avoid contacting law enforcement or requesting a security detail from the California Highway Patrol.
Video footage captured the tense standoff, showing multiple individuals scuffling as demonstrators surrounded Steyer’s SUV, with one protester demanding his position on reparations—a policy Steyer championed during his unsuccessful 2020 presidential campaign. Another agitator shouted warnings against returning to what activists call “Africatown,” while a third confronted the billionaire directly with hostile language.
According to reports, only the arrival of a California Highway Police officer enabled Steyer to depart the scene.
Frustration Over Democratic Outreach
Dennae Wright, a 44-year-old social worker and protester, articulated the grievances driving the confrontation. “Black people are really kind of tired of the Democratic Party always coming around during election season for our votes,” she told journalists. She criticized what she characterized as superficial gestures from Democratic candidates seeking electoral support.
Democratic State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, who co-hosted the event with Steyer, acknowledged the protest was predictable given Leimert Park’s activist history but praised the candidate’s willingness to engage directly with the community.
Polling Position in Governor’s Race
Steyer remains positioned as a serious contender in the California gubernatorial contest. An Emerson College poll conducted earlier this month showed him tied for second place with Republican Steve Hilton at 17 percent support, trailing Xavier Becerra at 19 percent. However, Becerra and Hilton have maintained more consistent polling leads heading into June’s primary election.
