JD Vance Gets Icy Reception During Tense ‘The View’ Interview
Vice President JD Vance received a mixed reception on "The View" Tuesday, with some audience members declining to applaud as he appeared to promote his new book on faith.
As Vance walked onto the set of the Disney-owned network’s Lower Manhattan studio to promote his new book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” the program’s co-hosts stood to greet him, according to New York Post. While a portion of the studio audience clapped, cameras captured others who remained seated with arms crossed or hands resting in their laps.
The outlet reports that ABC and Vance have both been contacted for comment on the incident.
The relationship between the Vice President and the daytime program has been marked by friction. The show’s left-wing panelists have repeatedly criticized both Vance and President Trump across multiple policy areas over recent years.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg acknowledged the significance of the booking at the segment’s opening, telling viewers the show had extended invitations to their guest for some time and expressing satisfaction he had accepted.
The appearance represents only the third time a sitting vice president has joined “The View” in the program’s nearly 30-year broadcasting history.
The White House offered a different characterization of the reception. The administration’s Rapid Response 47 account posted on X that Vance received enthusiastic applause, roaring applause for our Vice President — even on The View, and shared video footage showing audience members clapping as the Vice President greeted hosts and took his place at the show’s discussion table.
History of Hostile Audience Reactions
“The View” studio audience has demonstrated a pattern of vocal responses to conservative political figures, as New York Post notes. In 2022, climate activists disrupted a live interview with Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, forcing Goldberg to have them escorted from the building.
The following year saw audience members boo former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a Republican, during a gun control discussion. That incident prompted both Goldberg and co-host Joy Behar to reprimand viewers for their treatment of guests.
Ongoing Conflict Between Administration and Talk Show
Vance’s appearance occurs amid a broader confrontation between the Trump administration and the daytime program. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr previously initiated an investigation into whether “The View” violated equal-time regulations following an interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico.
ABC has pushed back against the FCC’s inquiry, contending the agency’s actions undermine established legal standards and constitutional free speech protections.
White House representatives and the show’s panelists have exchanged public criticism repeatedly. Administration officials have issued formal statements condemning remarks by Goldberg, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Behar in response to their on-air criticism of Trump and his policies.
Prior to the Vice President’s interview, executive producer Brian Teta expressed hope on the show’s “Behind the Table” podcast that the conversation would feature respectful yet passionate debate.
