Ilia Remeslo, Putin Critic, Admitted to Psychiatric Clinic After Shocking Statement
Ilia Remeslo, once a Kremlin supporter and critic of Putin’s opponents, shocked audiences by condemning Putin and was subsequently admitted to a psychiatric hospital under unclear circumstances.
A figure who supported the Kremlin and unexpectedly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine in a social media post this week that went viral has been admitted to a psychiatric facility, the hospital announced on Thursday.
Ilya Remeslo built a career criticizing Putin’s detractors until he himself became one, publishing late Tuesday night a manifesto to his 90,000 followers on Telegram titled: “Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vlad.”
A woman who answered the hospital’s phone number confirmed to Reuters that a man with the first name, patronymic, and last name matching Remeslo’s had been admitted to the facility.
The hospital employee, who did not give her name, said she had no details on when Remeslo was admitted or why.
Remeslo, 42, a lawyer and former member of an advisory body controlled by the Kremlin, had previously been a fierce critic of the late opposition figure Alexei Navalny, Putin’s most prominent critic, who died in a penal colony in the Arctic in February 2024.
