Greece: Egyptian man attempted to sexually assault two women
A 20-year-old Egyptian man attacked three women in Athens' Ampelokipoi district within 20 minutes, with authorities unable to deport him despite his illegal status and prior criminal record.
A series of sexual assaults unfolded in the Ampelokipoi district of Greece, where a 20-year-old Egyptian man attacked three women within a span of 20 minutes on Monday afternoon, July 20.
Terror in the city squares
According to Law & Order, the perpetrator — an Egyptian with the initials A.N. — attempted to sexually assault two women in the area. One victim described the moment of the attack in detail: “I had left Panormos and was heading toward Ampelokipoi, on Kifisias road I was looking at my phone and at that moment suddenly, from behind me he must have come, he passed his arm around my shoulders and tried to grab my breast.”
The woman managed to escape the perpetrator through her decisive reaction. As she told Star, she hesitated to resist him violently due to fear of potential weapons he might be carrying: “And at that moment I’m thinking either I’ll beat him up, but I didn’t know if he has a knife on him, I didn’t know if he has a weapon on him, so I’m thinking let me not play brave, let me go into a flower shop and be done with it.”
Previous attack on a mother
Before the incidents in Ampelokipoi, the same individual had attacked a mother on Lakonias Street. He followed her while behaving abusively toward her and pulled down his trousers, exposing his genitals. The terrified woman took refuge in a supermarket and informed her daughter about the incident.
Known to authorities with multiple offenses
After the attacks, the perpetrator continued to move around the city indifferently, as if he hadn’t committed murder. Examination of his background revealed that the 20-year-old is known to authorities for robberies, thefts, drug possession, and animal abuse.
Particularly alarming is the fact that the foreign national is illegally present in Greece. Despite the possibility of deportation, he cannot be expelled due to restrictive conditions imposed in relation to his previous attacks. A ban on exiting the country and an obligation to report to a police station have been imposed on him.
Prosecution for sexual assault
The 20-year-old is charged with repeated offenses against sexual dignity and has been referred to justice. This is yet another time he has been brought before a court for similar crimes.
