Director Uwe Boll Explains Why He Made Film on Migrant Violence
A controversial German film about vigilante justice against migrant crime has been blocked from distribution after ratings authorities refused to classify it.
German filmmaker Uwe Boll has found himself at the center of a censorship battle over his action thriller “Citizen Vigilante,” which tells the story of a man who takes the law into his own hands after losing faith in a weak justice system that fails to address migrant crime. The film has been blocked from regular cinema distribution, retail sales, television broadcast, and major streaming platforms after Germany’s voluntary rating board, the FSK, assigned it the rare label “KK” (Keine Kennzeichnung), meaning “no classification.”
The decision amounts to what critics are calling a de facto ban and an act of censorship. Boll himself described it to the British newspaper Daily Telegraph as a clear case of censorship, and has already mounted unsuccessful legal challenges against the ruling.

In a move that circumvents the German establishment’s blockade, the film is now available for 48 hours on X, thanks to platform owner Elon Musk. Speaking to Nius, Boll said the film has become a flashpoint in the culture war, and that it is important to break through such barriers.
A Film Born of Anger at Europe’s Political Class
“Citizen Vigilante” follows Sanders, an American real estate entrepreneur living in Europe and played by Armie Hammer, who grows fed up with state institutions’ leniency toward criminals from Africa and the Islamic world and resorts to vigilante justice. The film contains undeniably brutal scenes, but the FSK’s classification cannot be attributed to violence alone. Numerous successful action films feature protagonists dispensing vigilante justice, and the four “John Wick” films depict a total of 439 killings.
“Citizen Vigilante” is a fictional construct that comes dangerously close to reality, and that proximity is what makes it so threatening to the FSK. It describes what could happen if Europeans resist culturally alien immigration. The film’s protagonist targets migrant criminals. In the final act, he kills six teenagers who raped a 14-year-old girl, as well as the Muslim family of one of the perpetrators, a family that upholds archaic values and believes the victim deserved what happened because she provoked the boys with revealing clothing.
The filmmaker’s willingness to tackle forbidden subjects has turned “Citizen Vigilante” into a test case for free expression in Germany, where the political and media establishment maintains strict control over narratives surrounding migration and integration.
