The deadly blast occurred at a manufacturing site operated by Hanwha Aerospace in Daejeon, a city located in South Korea’s central region, according to New York Post. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following reports of the explosion and subsequent fire.

Yoon Seong-su, an emergency official, confirmed that the affected location holds government-designated security facility status, underscoring the sensitive nature of operations conducted there.

Local medical official Kim Ju-yeon provided an update on casualties, revealing that one of the two survivors remains in critical condition. Authorities have not yet been able to identify the five deceased individuals, she added.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined, and officials have released limited details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Yonhap news agency, the Daejeon facility serves as one of Hanwha Aerospace’s primary research and production centers, specializing in the development of large-scale propellants and surface-to-surface weapons systems. The facility’s strategic importance to South Korea’s defense capabilities makes the incident particularly significant.

Hanwha Aerospace is a major player in South Korea’s defense industry, contributing to the country’s military readiness amid ongoing regional security challenges.

Investigations into what triggered the explosion are expected to proceed with heightened urgency given the facility’s classified status and role in national defense manufacturing.
