Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s communist leader, has issued an ominous threat of catastrophic consequences should the United States take military action against the island nation, according to Breitbart News. The warning comes in response to intelligence reports suggesting Havana is actively expanding its drone arsenal with hostile intent toward American interests.

Intelligence briefings cited by the Washington-based outlet Axios indicate that Cuba currently maintains a military drone inventory exceeding 300 units and may be contemplating strikes against American targets. Russian and Iranian support for the weapons program has reportedly enabled the regime to develop this capability. Cuban communist officials have allegedly discussed deployment scenarios targeting the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, American military vessels, and potentially Key West, Florida.

Moscow’s involvement appears deliberate. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, confirmed on Monday that Russia maintains “constant contact with our Cuban friends,” describing regular exchanges about alleviating pressure from American economic sanctions. The admission underscores deepening Moscow-Havana coordination at a time when Cuba has reportedly sent personnel to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Iran’s role in arming Cuba extends a broader regional strategy. Tehran has aggressively marketed its affordable “Shahed” drone platforms globally, with the systems proving effective in Ukraine. Bolivia’s socialist government similarly acquired Iranian drone technology in 2023, signaling Tehran’s expanding influence throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Díaz-Canel’s response rejected accusations of aggression, claiming “Cuba did not have plans or aggressive intentions against any country.” However, this assertion contradicts historical record—most notably the 1996 Brothers to the Rescue incident, when Cuba shot down civilian aircraft, killing four Americans. The Trump administration has reportedly pursued legal action against 94-year-old Raúl Castro for his role in that attack.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez doubled down, asserting the island’s “absolute and legitimate right to defend itself” while simultaneously warning that “the determination of the Cuban people to defend their sovereignty” remains unwavering. The contradictory posturing—denying aggressive intent while issuing combat readiness declarations—reflects Havana’s confrontational stance as diplomatic tensions escalate.

The escalating rhetoric follows months of alleged behind-the-scenes negotiations between Washington and Havana. CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently made a rare visit to Havana, signaling direct engagement at the highest intelligence levels. President Donald Trump indicated last week via Truth Social that discussions regarding cooperation with Cuba would commence, stating, “Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!!!”
