Beto O’Rourke Backs Talarico for Texas Senate Seat
Former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke predicted Democratic state representative James Talarico will win the U.S. Senate race and become the decisive 51st vote in the chamber.
Speaking on MSNBC’s “The Briefing” on Wednesday, O’Rourke expressed extraordinary optimism about Democratic prospects in Texas, according to Breitbart News.
The former congressman, who lost his own Senate bid against Ted Cruz in 2018 and subsequently failed in his 2020 presidential campaign, characterized current conditions as unprecedented for Democrats in the state. He pointed to fundraising momentum and recent voting patterns as evidence of a shifting political landscape.
O’Rourke highlighted that Talarico has been drawing substantial support from small dollar donors statewide and faces Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in what he framed as a favorable matchup for Democrats.
The Democratic operative noted special election results and primary voting data that showed Democrats outperforming Republicans in turnout, a notable development in a state long considered solidly Republican territory.
O’Rourke described Talarico as the best I’ve seen over the course of my life among candidates running in Texas politics, calling on supporters to unite behind the Democratic challenger.
He revealed that his political organization, Powered by People, has deployed volunteers across Texas to register voters and maintain contact with potential supporters who could provide the margin of victory in both the Senate race and down-ballot contests that will determine control of the House of Representatives.
The former congressman’s prediction that Talarico would serve as the 51st Senate vote suggests Democrats believe they can reach a 50-seat threshold elsewhere, making the Texas seat the tiebreaker in a closely divided chamber.
