Anti-Migration Rioters Clash with Police in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland experienced a second night of civil unrest Wednesday following a knife attack earlier this week allegedly by a Sudanese asylum seeker, with masked rioters attacking police and setting fires.
According to Breitbart News, large groups of masked men wearing black balaclavas confronted riot police from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) across multiple locations, including the Belfast suburb of Newtownabbey, where demonstrators set fire to a municipal lorry truck believed to be a gully emptier used for cleaning street drainage systems.
The violence spread to several areas throughout the region. On Antrim Road, rioters torched a car, while additional fires were ignited at the Sandyknowes roundabout, the Belfast Telegraph reported.
In Newtownabbey, police deployed water cannon to disperse a large crowd attempting to force entry into a hotel amid reports—or at minimum widespread rumours—that the facility was being used to house migrants.
Riot officers came under sustained attack from masked individuals hurling bricks and improvised projectiles on multiple occasions throughout the evening.
A residential property in the York Park area of north Belfast also came under assault on Wednesday.
The escalating violence follows reports that a “hit list” containing addresses of homes and other potential targets has been circulating on social media platforms. On Tuesday, homes believed to house migrants were reportedly attacked by rioters.
The PSNI issued a statement condemning the circulation of the address list as totally unacceptable.
The police force stated that families, homeowners, neighbours and community members have contacted them expressing extreme distress over the reckless activity. This is putting lives at risk and has to stop, the PSNI warned.
Officers cautioned that sharing personal information online with intent to endanger others may constitute a criminal offence, as may publishing or distributing threatening or abusive material. The force pledged to investigate any such posts brought to their attention.
Kate Nicholl, a Belfast Legislative Assembly Member, said she had spoken with PSNI officials who confirmed active patrols in affected areas and contact with several individuals at targeted addresses. She noted that people of all ethnicities are feeling unsettled and urged residents to check on their neighbours and remain safe.
The British government’s response has focused primarily on condemning those commenting on social media rather than addressing the initial stabbing attack itself, footage of which circulated widely online, or reports that UK authorities had granted asylum to the suspect after he entered the country illegally.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged to crack down on anyone fuelling division, insisting there is no justification for the violence and disorder threatening communities or for those who encouraged it online or elsewhere.
