Pope Urges Europe to Welcome More Migrants at Lampedusa Visit

Pope Leo XIV traveled to the Italian island of Lampedusa on Saturday, delivering a pointed message on migration and border security that coincided with America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations, according to The European Conservative.

During his visit to the Mediterranean island, which serves as one of the primary entry points for migrants crossing into Europe, the pontiff called on European nations to leverage their geographical position to provide swift maritime assistance and to receive, protect, and integrate those arriving by sea. He warned against allowing barriers to emerge between shipwrecked migrants and European vacationers.

The papal visit included a solemn stop at Lampedusa’s cemetery, where Leo XIV prayed at the graves of immigrants who perished attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing. He also inaugurated a commemorative plaque on the port’s pier honoring Pope Francis, whose first journey after his 2013 election brought him to this same island in July of that year.

The pope celebrated Mass before an assembly of approximately 4,000 attendees, including priests, believers, and migrants currently on the island. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude to Lampedusa’s residents, institutional leaders, coast guard personnel, priests, and medical professionals serving the community.

In an unscheduled departure from his planned itinerary, Leo XIV not only passed through the island’s so-called Gate of Europe installation but also ventured onto the rocky coastline facing the open Mediterranean. At one moment during his time on the rocks, the wind caught and removed his white papal cap.

The timing of the papal visit on July 4th did not go unnoticed by observers, as reported by The European Conservative, creating a symbolic contrast between American national celebration and European migration policy discussions.
