According to New York Post, the Mount Rushmore visit precedes the main anniversary celebration scheduled for Saturday night on the National Mall, where Trump will deliver an address followed by an extensive fireworks display.

The South Dakota monument, which features the carved granite faces of four American presidents, will host Trump for a keynote speech and fireworks show. The president previously visited the site in 2020 during his first term.

Fire safety concerns have been raised due to ongoing drought conditions in the region, though festivities are proceeding as planned.

Presidential Legacy Projects

Doug Burgum, the Interior Secretary and former North Dakota governor, is expected to accompany Trump on the trip.

Trump has long expressed interest in being added to Mount Rushmore alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. In 2020, he responded to the suggestion on social media, calling it a good idea. However, no concrete steps toward that goal have materialized during his second term.

Instead, the president has pursued alternative legacy projects centered on the nation’s capital. These initiatives include constructing a new ballroom adjacent to the White House, developing plans for a monumental arch, and undertaking renovations of several prominent Washington monuments and public areas.

Anniversary Week Activities

Earlier this week, Trump dedicated the Theodore Roosevelt presidential museum in Medora, North Dakota, where he welcomed comparisons to the historically influential leader.

The president will make his second flight aboard the Qatari jumbo jet that was provided for his use as Air Force One throughout his current term in office.

Political Headwinds

The anniversary celebrations unfold as Trump confronts rising gasoline prices stemming from the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Republican lawmakers have expressed mounting concern that the ongoing conflict could jeopardize the party’s control of at least one congressional chamber in the upcoming November midterm elections, as New York Post reports.
