Trump Returns to Rally Site Where He Was Nearly Killed
President Trump returned to the Washington Hilton where security remains largely unchanged despite the venue hosting his recent assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
According to New York Post, fundamental security vulnerabilities that enabled alleged shooter Cole Allen to smuggle firearms into the luxury hotel ahead of the April 25 dinner persist at the location. The property continues to rent rooms to guests unconnected to presidential visits, while external security screening remains absent from entrance protocols.
Vincent Fusca, who attended Trump’s Faith and Freedom Coalition address at the Hilton, expressed disbelief at the lax security measures. Fusca survived the July 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was photographed raising his fist alongside a bloodied Trump after the shooting.
The attendee described watching hotel guests enter through the front driveway with luggage and computer bags without any inspection process, telling New York Post he was not merely surprised but shocked by the security situation.
Fusca referenced both the Butler incident and the recent Charlie Kirk event as reasons more robust protections should have been implemented at the hotel.
At April’s Correspondents’ Dinner, entry protocols required attendees to present either a dinner ticket, pre-event invitation, or hotel reservation documentation during hours preceding the event. Those screening measures were not deployed for Trump’s Friday remarks to the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority conference.
Magnetometer placement outside the hotel ballroom hosting Trump’s address remained virtually identical to the April configuration, as New York Post reports. The nearest stairwell descending to the speech venue has been blocked by waist-high fencing, forcing attendees to walk approximately 30 additional feet to access alternative stairs.
Fusca stated his preference for turnstile checkpoints positioned outside the building exterior, arguing that authorities should have intercepted Allen in April before he entered the premises.
The Secret Service defended its existing procedures to New York Post, characterizing its response at the dinner as effective since Allen was subdued before reaching the ballroom where Trump and over 2,000 officials, journalists and business executives had assembled.
A Secret Service official described the agency’s approach as deploying a sophisticated, layered security framework custom-designed for each protective site that continuously evolves to address the heightened security environment. The official noted that while the existing security plan at the April 2025 Correspondents’ Dinner successfully interdicted an identified threat, the agency continually reviews its security posture and implements adjustments as necessary.
