Italian VP Picierno Forms Pro-Atlantic, Pro-Zelensky Movement
European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno has launched a pro-EU, Atlanticist movement in Italy supporting Ukraine aid, aiming to create a centrist bloc for the 2027 election.
The initiative, called “Spazio Pubblico” (“Public Space”), was unveiled just days after Pina Picierno formally left both Italy’s Democratic Party and the Socialist grouping in the European Parliament, according to Brussels Signal.
The new movement is positioned around a strongly pro-EU outlook combined with firm Atlanticist foreign policy commitments, particularly regarding continued Western military and political backing for Zelensky’s government in Ukraine.
Political observers say the project is designed to form the foundation of a new centrist bloc in Italian politics, drawing together liberal forces who reject alignment with both Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s centre-right government and the splintered centre-left opposition currently struggling for cohesion.
If “Spazio Pubblico” gains traction, it could establish a viable third political pole competing in Italy’s 2027 general election, challenging both the governing centre-right coalition and any unified centre-left alliance that emerges ahead of the vote.
The timing of Picierno’s departure from the Democratic Party and her simultaneous exit from the Socialist political family in Brussels suggests strategic positioning ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested electoral cycle in Italy.
Picierno’s move reflects broader tensions within Italy’s political landscape, where traditional party alignments have weakened and space has opened for new centrist formations willing to stake out clear positions on European integration and transatlantic security cooperation.
