GOP Rep: Should’ve Proven We Can Open Strait Before Talks
Republican Congressman Carlos Gimenez said the U.S. should have demonstrated military strength in the Strait of Hormuz before negotiating with Iran over the waterway crisis.
Speaking on CNN’s Situation Room on Tuesday, according to Breitbart News, Representative Gimenez outlined his position that the United States should have first proven its capability to forcibly reopen the strategic waterway regardless of Iranian interference.
The Florida congressman acknowledged that while such a demonstration would have required additional time, he believed the country was making progress in that direction. He noted that President Trump had reported American warships successfully escorting multiple vessels through the strait, though more degradation of Iran’s strike capabilities would have been necessary.
Nuclear Weapons and Free Passage Non-Negotiable
Gimenez identified two critical requirements that must be secured in any deal with Tehran. First and foremost, Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons capability. Second, the Strait of Hormuz must remain permanently open to commercial shipping without tolls or restrictions.
The congressman emphasized the necessity of robust verification mechanisms and maintaining economic leverage over the Islamic Republic. He stressed that Washington must retain the ability to quickly reimpose sanctions or even blockades should Iran violate any agreement.
Strength the Only Language Tehran Understands
Gimenez made clear his distrust of Iranian commitments, arguing that only demonstrations of strength and force can compel compliance from the regime. He indicated that Iran must understand America possesses both the capability and political will to enforce any agreement through economic and military pressure.
The congressman also referenced vulnerability points in Iran’s infrastructure, specifically mentioning Kharg Island as a weak point that the United States and Arab allies could target if necessary.
As details of the negotiated deal remain undisclosed, Gimenez said lawmakers are waiting anxiously to review the agreement’s specific terms and safeguards before making final assessments.
