Teen Who Stabbed Teacher in Essen Revealed as Islamist
A Kosovo-born teenager is on trial in Germany for three knife attacks in Essen motivated by jihadist ideology, including the stabbing of a teacher at a vocational college.
Erjon S., now 18 years old, stands before the Higher Regional Court charged with attempting to wage holy war against perceived unbelievers in a series of violent assaults on September 5, 2024, according to Nius.
Prosecutors allege the defendant attacked three separate victims that day: a janitor at a primary school, his own teacher at a vocational college, and a homeless man. All three were stabbed with a knife in what investigators have determined was an ideologically driven rampage.
The attacks triggered a lockdown alarm at the school, with police deploying in force across the Essen education campus. Officers eventually cornered the youth near Essen central station, where he launched an assault on law enforcement personnel in what prosecutors describe as a deliberate attempt to achieve martyrdom. Police were forced to shoot him to end the confrontation.
Digital evidence retrieved from the suspect’s devices revealed that Erjon S. had embraced jihadist-Islamist ideology in early 2024, when he was still 17 years old, as Nius reports. Analysis of his data showed he had produced extremist videos and formulated plans to carry out jihad against those he considered infidels.
Investigators also discovered that the teenager had loitered near a synagogue in the days before the attack, actively searching for Jewish victims to assault.
The case is being heard before the 5th Criminal Senate of the Higher Regional Court. Thirteen main trial dates have been scheduled, with proceedings expected to continue through September 9, 2025.
