House Hearing Targets Southern Poverty Law Center
The House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on June 9 to investigate allegations that the Southern Poverty Law Center funneled donor money to extremist groups.
The congressional hearing aims to examine recently disclosed information indicating that the SPLC has channeled funds to various extremist organizations, raising serious concerns about whether the group has deliberately inflated the domestic extremist threat while deceiving its financial supporters.
The investigation follows a Department of Justice indictment released last week alleging that the SPLC misused donor contributions to bankroll leaders and organizations affiliated with racist movements, including the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Nations, and the National Alliance.
DOJ Alleges Systematic Fraud Scheme
According to the superseding indictment filed Tuesday, the SPLC maintained paid informants described as “field sources” who actively promoted the very racist organizations that the SPLC simultaneously condemned on its public-facing website.
The Justice Department alleges that approximately $4.1 million in tax-exempt donations were diverted to compensate these individuals, whose activities reportedly included recruiting new members for hate groups and purchasing materials for cross burnings, along with KKK robes and ceremonial hoods.
Multiple Federal Charges Filed
The Southern Poverty Law Center currently faces 11 federal counts stemming from charges initially filed in April. The indictment includes allegations of wire fraud, making false statements to banking institutions, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The hearing represents a significant congressional examination of an organization that has long positioned itself as a leading authority on tracking hate groups and extremism across America. The allegations, if proven, would reveal a pattern of conduct fundamentally at odds with the SPLC’s stated mission and public image.
