Left-wing violence surges over 42 percent in Germany
Left-wing political violence in Germany surged over 42 percent in 2025 to 1,087 cases, with AfD members suffering 121 of 193 violent attacks against politicians nationwide.
According to Brussels Signal, the Federal Criminal Police Office recorded 1,087 left-wing violent crimes in 2025, representing a surge of over 42 per cent from the previous year. Overall left-motivated offences climbed by more than 35 per cent to 13,490 cases.
Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s Interior Minister, warned of a growing threat from the left-wing scene as the country grapples with escalating political violence.
Attacks on police officers were driven almost exclusively by left-wing perpetrators, the official statistics reveal.
Record Political Violence in Election Year
Germany registered 85,837 cases of politically motivated crime in 2025, the Bundestag election year, marking approximately a two per cent increase from 2024. The figure represents the highest total since joint federal and state crime statistics began in 2001.
Anti-Semitism increased by five per cent, with half of these incidents linked to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The spike drove a surge in hate crime reports inspired by the left.
AfD Disproportionately Targeted
Politicians and representatives from the Alternative for Germany were disproportionately targeted by violent attacks. Of 193 violent crimes against party officials and members nationwide, 121 were directed at AfD members—the highest of any party.
A broader count of 5,140 offences against politicians and party representatives showed the AfD suffering 1,852 incidents overall. The CDU reported 1,171 cases and the Greens had 1,005.
The term “attack” encompasses more than violent acts alone. Of the 5,140 registered crimes, only 193 were violent, while many others involved insults, slander, incitement to hatred or property damage. Attacks on AfD party buildings and offices also led the statistics.
Distorted Classification Methods
While the Federal Criminal Police Office classifies the largest share of politically motivated crime under the right-wing category at 42,544 cases, experts and critics point to significant distortions in how these figures are compiled.
A substantial portion consists of propaganda offences such as anonymous use of swastikas or banned symbols. Many such incidents, including those spray-painted by left-wing activists or pro-Palestine groups to smear opponents, are automatically recorded as right-wing.
Inter-ethnic clashes, such as between Kurdish and Turkish groups, are frequently categorised as right-wing or xenophobic even when they have no connection to German political extremism. Incidents are labelled right-wing if the victim is perceived as foreign or non-German, regardless of the perpetrator’s background or actual political motive.
This practice inflates the right-wing numbers while downplaying genuine left-wing violence, according to Brussels Signal.
In the first half of 2024, 84 violent attacks were made against German politicians, a sharp rise compared to 2023. AfD politicians were most often targeted in those assaults—48 times out of 84 cases.
