Alert: Six Cities Evacuated Over Factory Explosion Threat
Authorities evacuated over 40,000 residents from six Orange County cities after a tank containing thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate overheated at an aerospace facility, risking a potential explosion.
An alert has been sounded in Southern California as authorities proceeded with mass evacuations of six cities in Orange County, fearing a major explosion at an industrial facility.
A tank containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons (approximately 22,700-26,500 liters) of methyl methacrylate overheated at the GKN Aerospace facilities in Garden Grove. The substance, which is used in aerospace manufacturing, is considered particularly unstable at high temperatures, prompting local authorities to activate emergency protocols.
The evacuation zones expanded rapidly and now include the cities of Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster, in addition to Garden Grove. In total, over 40,000 people have been ordered to evacuate immediately.
According to Craig Covey, head of the fire department’s operations division, a complete failure of the cooling system is considered inevitable, although the exact timing cannot yet be determined.
Hazmat teams are working continuously to monitor the situation, while water cooling efforts have temporarily stabilized the temperature.
Meanwhile, residents are abandoning their homes taking with them only the essentials. Many areas are in a state of chaos, particularly among the large Vietnamese community. No injuries have been reported so far, however, 15 schools remained closed and traffic on Highway 22 has been disrupted.
Experts are examining two possible scenarios. In the less dangerous one, the tank could crack and the material could leak into the ground, which is why sandbags have already been placed to contain the spread. In the worst case, a thermal runaway could occur that would lead to a powerful explosion, with the risk of affecting neighboring tanks.
The vapors of the substance are heavier than air and can cause respiratory problems, nausea, headaches, and irritation. Authorities are urging citizens to follow instructions closely and avoid the area.
