Former Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner has waded into the intensifying debate over transgender athletes in women’s professional basketball, backing two ex-NBA players who have announced their intention to enter the WNBA draft as a protest against the league’s current policies.
The 76-year-old former decathlete, who transitioned in 2015, is lending her support to Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, both of whom have declared interest in registering for the 2027 WNBA draft to expose what they characterize as loopholes in league eligibility standards, according to Bridget Reilly writing in New York Post.
Jenner said the two former professional basketball players are exposing contradictions in how the WNBA handles the transgender athlete question. Speaking to Fox News, she criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert for what she described as evasive leadership on the matter.
According to Jenner, Engelbert acknowledged the league had discussed transgender participation but admitted officials have not reached a definitive policy. Jenner proposed a straightforward biological standard and argued that women’s sports must be safeguarded, citing Title IX as landmark legislation for female equality in athletics.
Former NBA Players Challenge League Policy
The controversy escalated when Freedom released a video showing himself signing documentation requesting the WNBA accept his entry into the 2027 draft pool. He followed up with a workout video captioned with references to transitioning to the women’s league, using the hashtag promoting his participation.
White, who is running as a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate and appeared in just three NBA games without scoring during his professional career, announced similar plans shortly afterward. Speaking to Fox News, he stated he identifies as transgender and considers himself a woman for the purposes of professional basketball.
League Responds With Anti-Hate Task Force
The WNBA convened an anti-hate task force meeting last week that brought together general managers and league presidents. The gathering determined there are currently no immediate eligibility issues affecting the league.
A league spokesperson condemned what officials characterized as bad-faith attempts to exploit the controversy to demean or marginalize others.
Commissioner Engelbert has previously stated the WNBA will address transgender athlete participation thoughtfully and in accordance with league values. Critically, she noted that unlike other sports organizations, WNBA player eligibility standards are established through collective bargaining with the players’ union.
WNBA Star Sparks National Conversation
The current debate was ignited when Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever told ESPN she aims to protect young girls from competing against biological men. The 29-year-old guard stood by her position despite backlash, subsequently drawing anti-trans athlete demonstrations at arenas where she played.
The episode has thrust the WNBA into the center of America’s broader culture war over sex-based sports categories and whether biological males should be permitted to compete in women’s athletics.
