Athens: Gas Smell Alarms Alimos and Palaio Faliro – Schools Evacuated

A strong gas odor has caused great concern among residents of Alimos and Palaio Faliro, with the smell also reaching neighboring areas of Attica.

The situation began early midday on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, with citizens reporting a strong smell at various locations. According to information, the odor was detected in the Municipality of Alimos, Kallithea, Agios Dimitrios, Nea Smyrni, and Zografou. In some areas, the smell was so intense that it led to immediate actions.

In Nea Smyrni and Agios Dimitrios, authorities proceeded with the evacuation of schools, as the odor was deemed particularly strong. The mayor of Agios Dimitrios, Stelios Mamalakis, stated that instructions were given to school principals to evacuate wherever deemed necessary. For a short time, the Town Hall was also evacuated, and gas supplies were temporarily shut off. Employees have already returned to their posts.

On his part, the mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis, clarified that this is not a natural gas leak. He said that services are trying to locate the source of the odor.

Residents in the affected areas expressed their concern via social media. Some reported that the smell reached as far as Palaio Faliro and Panorama Voula, while others described it as “stifling” and similar to propane gas.

The competent services and the Fire Department have been informed and are conducting inspections. An official update on the development of the incident is expected.
