The European Commission Will Implement the Mercosur Deal Before EU Court Ruling
The EU Commission will provisionally implement the Mercosur deal despite French opposition, awaiting the European Court's ruling and Parliament’s final consent, sparking institutional tensions.
The move by the European Commission, announced after the ratification of the agreement by Argentina and Uruguay on Thursday, comes despite strong opposition from France.
“The Commission will now proceed with provisional application,” von der Leyen announced, while emphasizing that the agreement “can only be fully completed once the European Parliament gives its consent.”
French Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, reacted on Friday saying:
It is a decision that makes me sad. It does not align with the respect that should be shown to the decision of the European Parliament.
She condemned the provisional application as “very detrimental to the functioning of our institutions and, above all, to the spirit of our European institutions.”
