New Democracy MPs’ OPEKEPE trials begin in October
Four New Democracy MPs implicated in the OPEKEPE scandal will face trials starting in October on charges including moral complicity in breach of trust and illegal management of European funds.
These are the first cases involving political figures to proceed under a new provision from the Justice Ministry aimed at expediting such proceedings.
The first trial is scheduled for October 2, when Katerina Papakosta will be tried. Due to her status as a lawyer, her case will be heard before the Third Single-Member Court of Appeals.
On October 27, Christos Boukoros will take the stand, followed by the trial of Maximos Senetakis on October 30. The cycle closes on November 12 with the hearing of Kostas Skrekas’s case.
The MPs face misdemeanor charges, varying by case, for moral complicity in breach of trust and moral complicity in illegal management of European funds. In Katerina Papakosta’s case, the charges additionally include moral complicity in false certification and attempted computer fraud.
According to Newsbomb, this development marks the beginning of judicial proceedings for specific political figures who had been referred in connection with the OPEKEPE case.
