CNN’s Van Jones blasts far left: Stop pooping in the punch bowl

Jones, who has built a career as one of the progressive movement’s most visible media voices, used social media over the weekend to denounce what he described as dangerous ideas being promoted by groups like the Democratic Socialists of America, according to Ryan King writing in New York Post.

The CNN pundit made clear his progressive credentials remain intact, pointing to his longstanding support for criminal justice reform, the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, free education, and environmental protections. Yet Jones drew a sharp line between those policy preferences and what he characterized as regressive proposals now circulating within Democratic circles.

At the heart of his criticism sits the DSA and aligned activists who have expressed support for Hamas, championed the elimination of police forces and prisons, and advocated for open borders. Jones flatly rejected the notion that celebrating violence against Israeli civilians could be considered progressive in any meaningful sense.

The warning comes as DSA-backed candidates have notched several primary victories heading into the 2026 midterm cycle, with the organization claiming wins in four congressional primaries along with success in down-ballot races.

Among those running on the far-left platform is New York Democrat Darializa Avila Chevalier, who has previously advocated for prison abolition. Jones highlighted the practical absurdity of such positions, noting that eliminating prisons would mean anyone in your neighborhood could do whatever they wanted.

In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed is locked in a tight primary contest against Representative Haley Stevens ahead of the August 4 vote. El-Sayed and other far-left candidates have made opposition to Israel and calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement central to their campaigns.

Jones expressed concern that mainstream Democrats, exhausted by battles with both MAGA Republicans and their own party establishment, might fail to notice extremists attempting to fundamentally reshape the party’s platform. He insisted that while Democrats should maintain a big tent approach to coalition building, there are limits to what can be accommodated.

The CNN commentator’s rebuke represents a rare public split within progressive circles, where criticism of the activist left often invites accusations of betraying core values. His willingness to call out what he views as infiltration by truly radical elements signals growing anxiety among establishment progressives that their movement risks being hijacked by forces hostile to American interests and basic social order.
