Bavaria: Greens Declare War on Women’s Bathroom Queues
Bavarian Greens propose revising building codes to ensure equal restroom facilities for women and men, tackling persistent long queues outside women’s toilets in public venues.
The Greens (Grünen) in the Bavarian Parliament have submitted a proposal aimed at preventing the formation of long queues in front of women’s restrooms in public spaces in the future. In the proposal titled “Women Have to Wait Too”, the state government is requested to ensure that future building regulations provide for “an equal number of toilet facilities for women and men in assembly venues.”
“These queues in front of the women’s restrooms are politically mandated,” said Greens MP Julia Post in an Instagram post regarding the proposal. Currently, the law states that “more men’s toilets must be built. And this is despite the fact that women a) go more often and b) need more time.” A new law aims to address this issue.
Do Urinals Make the Difference?
Post is likely referring to Article 12 of the Bavarian Assembly Venue Regulation. It stipulates that assembly venues must provide approximately 1.2 toilet seats for women and 0.8 toilet seats plus 1.2 urinals for men per 100 visitors. When urinals are included, men’s restrooms have a higher total number of facilities but fewer seated places. For 1,000 visitors, this means twelve toilets for women and eight seated toilets for men plus twelve urinals.
