8 Dead in Missile and Drone Strikes Across Russia, Ukraine
At least eight people died in a 24-hour exchange of missile and drone strikes between Russian and Ukrainian forces that damaged energy infrastructure and residential buildings across both territories.
The escalation comes after one of the most intensive Russian bombardments of Kyiv since the war began four years ago, following Moscow’s vow to retaliate for what it characterized as a deliberate Ukrainian drone strike on a student dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region, as New York Post reports.
Ukraine’s military rejected Russian accusations and stated it had targeted an elite drone command unit in the area, not civilian infrastructure.
Casualties in Russian-controlled territory
In the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian town of Horlivka, four people including two teenagers were killed in strikes, according to mayor Ivan Prikhodko, who blamed Ukrainian military aggression. In Russia’s Belgorod region, one man died and another was injured in combined missile and drone attacks that severed power and water supplies to local communities, regional authorities confirmed.
Ukrainian casualties mount
Across Ukrainian-controlled territory, the toll was significantly higher. In the southern Kherson region, two people died and 16 were wounded in Russian shelling, missile, and drone attacks over the same 24-hour period, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported Monday.
Near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, one person was killed and two injured when Russia carried out what preliminary information suggests was a missile strike on the town of Derhachi, just outside the city limits, according to the regional governor.
An additional eight people were wounded, including a six-year-old boy, in strikes across the southeastern regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. Emergency services in Dnipropetrovsk reported that a nine-storey apartment building in the town of Pavlohrad was struck by a drone attack, releasing images showing thick black smoke billowing from the structure.
Escalation amid stalled peace efforts
Both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny deliberately targeting civilian populations since Moscow’s invasion began in February 2022. The reports could not be independently verified.
The escalating strikes come as U.S. mediation efforts have so far failed to broker an end to the conflict. Both sides have accused each other of deliberately escalating hostilities, while Ukraine has announced plans to dispatch reinforcements to northern regions to counter what Kyiv believes are Russian preparations for a new offensive.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for renewed diplomatic efforts to end the fighting, suggesting a potential opening for negotiations despite the ongoing violence.
