Zimbabwe Probes Recruitment Pipeline to Russian Military
A Zimbabwean man was arrested in Harare for allegedly trafficking young men to fight for Russia in Ukraine, part of a broader pattern that has killed at least 18 Zimbabweans.
Edward Kachingwe, 36, was detained Monday at a bus terminal in the Zimbabwean capital while attempting to transport one of his recruits to South Africa for onward travel to Russia. Authorities charged him with two counts of trafficking in persons and operating an unregistered employment agency.
Prosecutors allege that Kachingwe conspired with a Russian national identified only as Roman to recruit at least five Zimbabwean citizens for military service in the armed conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Following his arrest, police seized electronic airline tickets, Russian visas, and hotel reservations for all five intended victims from Kachingwe’s possession.
Part of Wider Trafficking Network
The arrest follows a similar case earlier this month involving Russian national Leonid Koftev, who faced human trafficking charges for attempting to send a Zimbabwean man to Russia. These cases reflect a broader pattern of exploitation targeting young Africans.
Zimbabwe’s government reports that at least 18 of its nationals have been killed fighting for Russia in Ukraine, with at least 63 still believed to be involved in the conflict zone.
Government Issues Public Warning
In March, Zimbabwean Information Minister Zhemu Soda issued a public warning about Russian recruiting networks preying on young men through deceptive tactics. He stated that traffickers operate with complete disregard for human life, using sophisticated methods that often leverage social media platforms as primary recruitment tools.
Soda described a systematic pattern of deception where victims are promised well-paying civilian jobs in Russia, only to be forced into active combat after their passports are confiscated upon arrival. The recruits receive little to no military training before being placed in life-threatening combat situations, as Breitbart News reports.
When victims are injured, killed, or captured, the recruiters disappear entirely, leaving families in Zimbabwe without information, support, or anyone to hold accountable. In most cases, the promised wages are never paid.
Continental Recruitment Operation
Similar Russian recruiting schemes have been exposed in Kenya, South Africa, India, and most recently Peru. Ukrainian officials estimate that at least 1,700 Africans have been conscripted into service with the Russian military through these trafficking networks.
