He sent Turkish fishing boats to …camp out next to Kythira.

The Mayor of Kythira, Efstratios Charchalakis, sent an urgent letter to the port authorities, following strong protests from residents about the presence of Turkish vessels near the island’s coast.

As happened last summer, so too this year Turkish fishing vessels are moving freely within Greek territorial waters. The phenomenon, which many characterize as illegal, continues without substantive intervention from the Greek authorities, while local communities are now beginning to react.

Yesterday, for the first time, the Mayor of Kythira, Efstratios Charchalakis, sent an official and urgent letter to the 2nd Port Department of Voies (Kythira). In the document with protocol number 3036, dated June 29, 2026, he expresses residents’ deep concern about the continued presence of Turkish fishing vessels very close to the island.

According to the text, the municipality is receiving intense disturbances and complaints from dozens of citizens and residents. The vessels are moving at minimal distance from the coasts and inhabited areas, with Kapsali as a characteristic example. Their movements are recorded within Greek territorial waters and the Greek EEZ.

Awaiting response from port authorities

Mayor Efstratios Charchalakis stated that he is awaiting an immediate response from the port authorities, in order to have a complete picture and make a public statement.

As he emphasized, this is not an isolated incident. The same phenomenon has been observed in the past, while similar situations concern islanders at various points in the Aegean.

Spanos: Provocative tactics for the “Blue Homeland”

Newsbomb also contacted retired Admiral Nikolaos Spanos, who is closely monitoring the issue. As he explained, these are Turkish fishing vessels returning from Malta with cages full of fish, bound for Turkish ports.

However, along their route, and while they are inside Greek waters, they fish in order to feed the fish they are transporting.

Kythira is a passage point on this route. Beyond the violation of national sovereignty, this is a provocative attempt to establish the so-called Blue Homeland. Our country must finally react dynamically, because a “normality” is being created which Ankara will try to exploit at the institutional level as well, Mr. Spanos emphasized.

The phenomenon continues and local authorities are now called upon to take a stance, as residents’ patience is running out.

nfg-origin:gr

Turkish fishing boats are operating near Greece’s Kythira island, prompting the mayor to send an urgent letter to port authorities after residents complained about vessels in Greek territorial waters.

[122
818,100,234,8522,2216,926,95
134
post-9423","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-aegean-sea","tag-greece","tag-kyriakos-mitsotakis","tag-kythira","tag-nato-summit","tag-recep-tayyip-erdogan","tag-turkey","nfg_topic-europe
["GET
