The Regional Court of Magdeburg found the defendant guilty of murder and determined the particular severity of his guilt, according to Nius<\/em>. This legal designation effectively rules out any possibility of early release after 15 years, which is typically when life sentences in Germany become eligible for parole review. A decision on preventive detention beyond the sentence will be made at a later date. The verdict is not yet final.<\/p>\n

The sentencing hearing was briefly interrupted when the defense attorney informed the court that the defendant could not hear the presiding judge’s statements from inside the glass enclosure where he sat during proceedings. Technical issues were resolved before the court continued.<\/p>\n

On December 20, 2024, the perpetrator<\/strong> drove a rented vehicle weighing more than two tons into the busy Magdeburg Christmas market. The car, which had 340 horsepower, reached speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour during the attack, according to investigators. A nine-year-old boy and five women were killed. Hundreds of people sustained injuries, many of them severe. Police arrested the driver immediately after the attack while he was still in the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Massive Trial With Over 200 Plaintiffs<\/h2>\n

The trial was one of the largest in the history of Saxony-Anhalt. More than 200 victims participated as co-plaintiffs in the proceedings, and many attended the verdict announcement. Due to the scale of the case, the state constructed a temporary lightweight court building specifically for the trial.<\/p>\n

The Attorney General’s Office had requested life imprisonment, the determination of particular severity of guilt, and preventive detention. The co-plaintiffs supported this demand. The defense, however, argued that the requirements for preventive detention were not met.<\/p>\n

Personal Motives, Not Ideology<\/h2>\n

Prosecutors concluded that the attack had been planned well in advance. The defendant did not pursue serious ideological goals, but rather acted out of personal motives. In the closing arguments, prosecutors stated that the defendant was concerned only with himself. A psychiatric expert diagnosed the man with narcissistic personality disorder and a strong need for attention.<\/p>\n

The attacker had received asylum in Germany years earlier and subsequently obtained recognition as a specialist physician. Until shortly before the attack, he worked as a psychiatrist in correctional facilities for mentally ill offenders in Bernburg. He publicly presented himself as an activist for the rights of Saudi women. At the same time, he had been engaged in a years-long dispute with a refugee assistance organization in Cologne and repeatedly clashed with authorities.<\/p>\n
