The film has been blocked from regular cinema distribution, retail sales, television broadcast, and major streaming platforms after Germany&#8217;s voluntary rating board, the FSK, assigned it the rare label &#8220;KK&#8221; (Keine Kennzeichnung), meaning &#8220;no classification.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision amounts to what critics are calling a <em>de facto ban<\/em> and an act of censorship. Speaking to <em>Nius<\/em>, Boll said the film has become a flashpoint in the culture war, and that it is important to break through such barriers.<\/p>\n<h2>A Film Born of Anger at Europe&#8217;s Political Class<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Citizen Vigilante&#8221; follows <strong>Sanders<\/strong>, an American real estate entrepreneur living in Europe and played by <strong>Armie Hammer<\/strong>, who grows fed up with state institutions&#8217; leniency toward criminals from Africa and the Islamic world and resorts to vigilante justice. The film contains undeniably brutal scenes, but the FSK&#8217;s classification cannot be attributed to violence alone. For Boll, such portrayals bear no resemblance to reality. He set out to make a radical film that would spark debate about the extreme dark side of illegal migration.<\/p>\n<p>Boll told <em>Nius<\/em> he sees urgent need for action. <em>This film is angry because of the politicians who govern us,<\/em> he explained. His work presents an alternative factual mood picture, he said, showing what public broadcasters refuse to acknowledge. When you speak obvious truths, you get attacked for it, he added, noting that pointing out grievances is by no means a right-wing attitude.<\/p>\n<h2>No Fair Discussion About Real Problems<\/h2>\n<p>Asked about his motivation for making the film, Boll told <em>Nius<\/em> his answer was simple: because no one else does it. He has been an outsider for 20 years, he said, taking on topics that truly interest people. Those people feel politically homeless, he explained. There is no fair discussion about what can be done for security in the country or against Islamization, he said, only discussion about banning the AfD party.<\/p>\n<p>The FSK, by contrast, claims Boll&#8217;s film would incite violence against migrants and that the main character Sanders could serve as a role model. Despite being fictional, the ratings board argued, the film has a high degree of reality reference, particularly through the topics it addresses and its mirroring of events in television news and social media. For at-risk youth, on whom the decision was based, sufficient distancing was deemed impossible and the problematic aspects and messages were assumed likely to take hold.<\/p>\n<h2>Dangerously Close to Reality<\/h2>\n<p>Boll rejected this characterization in his conversation with <em>Nius<\/em>. It describes what could happen if Europeans resist culturally alien immigration. The film&#8217;s protagonist targets migrant criminals.
