Anton Milaev<\/strong>, aged 45, is the adopted grandson of Brezhnev’s daughter and had been serving as an elite combat engineer in the Russian armed forces since last fall, as New York Post<\/em> reports. He lost contact with his family in November after deploying to fight in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Months after his disappearance, Milaev’s relatives were informed that he is being held as a prisoner of war in a de-occupied section of Ukraine’s Kherson region, according to the Russian Telegram channel Baza. An adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, Serhiy Sternenko<\/strong>, also shared confirmation of the capture via Telegram this past Thursday.<\/p>\n

The precise details surrounding Milaev’s capture remain unclear, and whether he will be included in any future prisoner exchange is currently unknown.<\/p>\n

Before his capture, Milaev posted photographs of himself in military uniform on the Russian social media platform VKontakte in January 2025. In the images, he displayed his call sign Udacha<\/em>, which translates to “luck” or “fortune” in English.<\/p>\n

Russian social media commentary noted the ironic trajectory of the General Secretary’s family lineage following the Soviet Union’s dissolution, calling the development paradoxical.<\/p>\n

Leonid Brezhnev<\/strong> served as General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1964 until his death in 1982, presiding over the Soviet Union for nearly two decades. Brezhnev maintained his grip on power even as his health visibly deteriorated in his final years, leaving the Soviet system mired in dysfunction and unable to reform.
