While postwar Western societies marginalized overt Nazi-style antisemitism, anti-Zionist rhetoric evaded such stigma by cloaking traditional libels in seemingly political language about Israel and Zionists. The contemporary Western left has appropriated this extensive Soviet playbook, prioritizing propaganda effectiveness over factual accuracy.<\/p>\n
Professor Gunther Jikeli<\/strong>, associate director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism at Indiana University, stated that applying the accepted legal definition of genocide reveals the accusation to be categorically false. The charge constitutes defamation and demonization of a nation, he noted, while creating direct consequences for Jewish communities worldwide who face constant suspicion of supporting an allegedly evil state.<\/p>\n Anti-Zionist ideology provides a preemptive remedy for the cognitive dissonance this creates. She compared it to religious antisemitism’s equation of Jews with the Devil. The Soviets alleged Zionist collaboration with Nazis during the Holocaust, Tabarovsky noted. Believing Zionists are Nazis makes it easy to believe they commit genocide, and a people accused of genocide becomes irredeemable.<\/p>\n The danger is unmistakable. If Zionists or Jews are believed to be genocidaires, violence against Jewish communities becomes justifiable in the minds of extremists. The last time Diaspora Jews faced mass violence, two-thirds of European Jewry perished in the Holocaust.<\/p>\n Norman J.W. Goda<\/strong>, Norman and Irma Braman professor of Holocaust studies at the University of Florida, described a tension between recognition of the Holocaust as a civilizational rupture by European intellectuals and colonial violence narratives. Resentment stems from the belief that the Holocaust’s magnitude overshadows other mass crimes in global consciousness, and that Jews deploy Holocaust memory to portray themselves as eternal victims while Israel allegedly uses it to obscure colonial crimes.<\/p>\n Holocaust inversion emerges from this resentment. It relativizes the Holocaust and transforms its victims into villains, effectively weaponizing the Holocaust’s moral clarity against its historical victims.<\/p>\n Jeffery characterized this as a form of moral theft prevalent in anti-Israel activism. Pro-Palestinian and leftist groups have mastered this technique, he observed. German anti-Zionists announced an April vigil at Buchenwald opposing what they called genocide in Palestine, scheduled for the 81st anniversary of the concentration camp’s liberation. German authorities blocked the event from that location.<\/p>\n Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, anti-Zionists intensified genocide accusations against the Jewish state regarding Gaza operations. Sustaining these charges has required ignoring evidence that no genocide occurred and redefining the term as a rhetorical weapon against Israel.<\/p>\n
