Interior Minister Marcin Kierwi\u0144ski<\/strong> announced Thursday that the 36-year-old suspect was carrying a Georgian passport at the time of his arrest following Monday’s daylight shooting, according to New York Post<\/em>. Investigators believe the man has ties to organized crime and may be linked to additional criminal activity in Poland dating back to 2022.<\/p>\n

The victim, Robert Kuzovkov<\/strong>, who operated under the pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, was gunned down near his residence in Biala Podlaska, an eastern Polish city close to the Belarusian border. The 44-year-old artist died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds after the assailant fired twice before delivering three additional close-range shots to his head, chest and back.<\/p>\n

Link to Foreign Intelligence Services<\/h2>\n

Tomasz Siemoniak<\/strong>, Poland’s security services minister, confirmed that authorities are treating foreign intelligence involvement as a serious possibility. Speaking at a Warsaw press conference alongside Kierwi\u0144ski, he noted that foreign services have previously recruited criminals to conduct operations abroad, though earlier cases involved assaults rather than murder.<\/p>\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk<\/strong> declared Wednesday that the assassination carries unmistakable political characteristics. He warned that if Russian involvement is confirmed, it would represent state terrorism and an extremely grave international incident.<\/p>\n

Two Belarusian citizens were initially detained but subsequently released when investigators found no evidence of their direct participation in the killing.<\/p>\n

Artist Who Mocked Putin and Russian Leadership<\/h2>\n

Kuzovkov had established himself as a vocal critic of the Kremlin through his provocative artwork. His portfolio included unflattering portraits of Putin, Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov<\/strong>, and other senior Russian officials. One particularly pointed piece depicted Putin being cradled by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.<\/p>\n

Just days before his murder, on June 12\u2014Russia’s sovereignty holiday\u2014the activist posted video footage to his YouTube channel showing himself in Berlin depositing a Russian flag into a garbage bin.<\/p>\n

Pattern of Transnational Russian Operations<\/h2>\n

The killing fits within a broader pattern of suspected Russian sabotage operations across NATO territory aimed at intimidating Ukraine’s Western backers. Warsaw has previously warned of coordinated efforts to spread fear and undermine support for Kyiv among its closest European allies.<\/p>\n

Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has faced repeated accusations of targeting opposition figures and defectors across Europe. Exiled activists in France and Lithuania have reportedly been marked for assassination, while German authorities have disrupted plots against a weapons supplier executive and Ukrainian military personnel.<\/p>\n

In 2024 alone, Polish security services arrested a suspect in an alleged plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong>, while a Russian military helicopter pilot who defected to the West was murdered in Spain with Russian operatives identified as the primary suspects.<\/p>\n
