Lawmakers in Brussels backed the legislation by 418 votes to 218, according to Brussels Signal<\/em>, marking a significant shift in how the European Union handles the removal of migrants who have no legal right to remain.<\/p>\n

The new regulation mandates that illegal immigrants receive a formal return decision with typically up to 30 days to depart voluntarily. During this period, individuals must cooperate with authorities by providing identification documents, travel papers, biometric data, and contact information. The rules explicitly prohibit migrants from concealing, destroying, or falsifying documents or evading officials.<\/p>\n

European Return Order to Close Loopholes<\/h2>\n

A key innovation in the legislation is the “European Return Order,” designed to prevent illegal migrants from avoiding deportation by moving between member states. This standardized order will be entered into the EU’s Schengen information systems, enabling authorities in any member state to recognize and enforce a deportation decision issued elsewhere without restarting the expulsion process from scratch.<\/p>\n

Controversial Return Hubs Outside EU Borders<\/h2>\n

Among the most contentious provisions is the authorization of so-called “return hubs.” These facilities allow EU countries to forge agreements with non-EU nations to process returns, potentially in dedicated centers located outside Union territory. Migrants could be transferred to third countries other than their country of origin, provided those nations are bound by agreements ensuring respect for fundamental rights and the principle of non-refoulement.<\/p>\n

German MEP Mary Khan<\/strong> welcomed the vote as a clear signal that illegal migrants will no longer be permitted to obstruct deportation indefinitely. Anyone who is here illegally will not make Germany their home<\/em>, she told Brussels Signal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Khan emphasized that cooperation between the EPP, ECR, and Patriots factions demonstrated what a right-wing majority could accomplish when citizen interests are prioritized.<\/p>\n

Renew Negotiator Hails End to Two-Decade Standstill<\/h2>\n

Malik Azmani<\/strong>, a Renew MEP who served as lead negotiator, described the legislation as the final missing component of Europe’s migration system. He noted that after almost 20 years of legislative paralysis, Europe finally has effective return measures in place. People rightly expect those without a right to stay to return to their countries of origin, Azmani stated.<\/p>\n

Church Leaders Warn of Weakened Protections<\/h2>\n

Not all observers celebrated the outcome. The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union issued criticism through its president, Mariano Crociata<\/strong>, who cautioned that the legislation could undermine safeguards for vulnerable persons. He argued that migration policy must continue to place human dignity at its center, emphasizing that migration concerns women, men, and children, each possessing inviolable dignity.<\/p>\n

The legislation now awaits formal adoption by the EU Council before entering into force across all member states.<\/p>\n
