Leaders of the seven major Western economies signed a joint declaration on June 17 during their summit in the French town of \u00c9vian-les-Bains, according to Brussels Signal<\/em>. The agreement reaffirms the group’s backing for Ukrainian sovereignty while also welcoming a US-brokered agreement that brought an end to recent hostilities with Iran.<\/p>\n

The declaration commits member states to strengthening Ukraine’s military and energy infrastructure while ramping up economic pressure on Moscow’s war machine through enhanced sanctions aimed at Russia’s oil and gas sectors.<\/p>\n

G7 leaders also pledged additional assistance to reinforce Ukraine’s electrical grid ahead of the coming winter months, when Russian forces are anticipated to resume their campaign of strikes against the country’s energy networks. The leaders declared their unwavering support for Ukraine<\/em> in the joint statement.<\/p>\n

Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, President of the European Commission, and Ant\u00f3nio Costa<\/strong>, President of the European Council, participated in the discussions. European Union representatives urged G7 partners to finance the remaining third of Ukraine’s budgetary requirements for the next two years.<\/p>\n

The EU approved a \u20ac90 billion ($105 billion) loan package in April that covers two-thirds of Kyiv’s budget, with other international supporters expected to provide the balance. One-third of the European loan will fund budgetary support, while two-thirds is designated for defense spending. The first installment is scheduled for disbursement before year’s end.<\/p>\n

European governments have emerged as the primary source of both military hardware and financial assistance to Ukraine since President Trump scaled back United States involvement, forcing France and other European allies to assume a far greater share of the costs.<\/p>\n

During remarks to the press in \u00c9vian, Trump<\/strong> indicated that Washington may soon restore sanctions on Russian oil exports, which had been relaxed earlier in the year to help suppress prices during the Iran crisis. The President suggested the timing would be appropriate now that Iranian oil supplies have resumed normal flows.<\/p>\n

Trump has consistently challenged the extent of American engagement in what he characterizes as a conflict with minimal direct consequences for the United States, though he has expressed concern about casualties. The President has instead advocated for a diplomatic resolution between Moscow and Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> participated in a working session on June 16, where von der Leyen and Costa assured him that momentum in the war was shifting in Ukraine’s favor.<\/p>\n

The European Commission is currently drafting a 21st round of sanctions against Russia, anticipated for release in July, that will focus on energy, financial services, and trade sectors.<\/p>\n
