Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted despite the recent announcement of a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran, with experts warning it could take more than two months before shipping levels return to normal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to New York Post<\/em>, only a small number of vessels have begun crossing the strategic waterway since Sunday’s peace deal was announced. The Malta-flagged Disha gas tanker was among the first to openly transit the strait on its way to India.<\/p>\n

Most of the approximately 500 ships currently trapped in the Persian Gulf are expected to remain in place until a formal signing ceremony takes place in Switzerland on Friday. Even after that milestone, the flow of traffic will be dramatically reduced compared to pre-war levels.<\/p>\n

Ana Subasic<\/strong>, a trade risk analyst at maritime data firm Kpler, told the outlet that only around 15 ships per day are anticipated to cross initially. At that rate, clearing the backlog alone would require roughly 30 days, with the full resolution of constraints and complications potentially stretching to eight weeks.<\/p>\n

Before hostilities erupted, more than 130 vessels passed daily through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint responsible for transporting 20 percent of the world’s oil supply. Returning to that volume may prove even more challenging due to ongoing disputes between Washington and Tehran over control of the waterway, as well as uncertainty about the number of naval mines still present.<\/p>\n

Dimitris Ampatzidis<\/strong>, maritime risk and compliance manager at Kpler, explained that while political and security conditions may allow the strait to reopen quickly, the commercial shipping system will likely take much longer to normalize.<\/p>\n

Cautious Approach Expected<\/h2>\n

Ship captains are expected to wait for explicit confirmation from both the United States Navy and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps before attempting passage, according to Matthew Reisner<\/strong>, a senior national security analyst at the Center for Maritime Strategy.<\/p>\n

Reisner noted that confidence will build gradually as more vessels complete the crossing without incident. If the peace agreement holds, consumers could see relief at the pump within one to two weeks, driven by crude oil prices that already dropped more than 5 percent Monday morning following the peace announcement.<\/p>\n

However, gasoline prices may take several months to return to pre-war levels, the analyst cautioned.<\/p>\n

Potential Toll System Could Complicate Recovery<\/h2>\n

Additional complications may arise if Tehran implements a toll system for passage through the strait after the 60-day ceasefire period expires. Such a move could trigger intense competition among nations seeking favorable terms from Iran or searching for alternative shipping routes.<\/p>\n

Karin Storm<\/strong>, vice president at Proxima procurement and supply chain consultants, warned that this scenario would likely produce higher oil prices, extended transit times as operators reroute, and a more fragmented global shipping market where access depends as much on political alignment as economic factors.<\/p>\n

Storm emphasized that given the strait’s critical role in global oil transport, even modest disruptions would rapidly impact inflation, transportation costs, and consumer prices worldwide.<\/p>\n
