Despite consistently excellent performance reviews from her inspectors throughout her career, Lefebvre now faces sanctions ranging from demotion and temporary suspension of salary to outright dismissal from the French national education system.

The charges against her have nothing to do with classroom conduct. Lefebvre has not made inappropriate statements to students, has not offended or attacked any pupil, parent, or colleague, and has caused no scandal within her school. She has not been excessively absent or endangered anyone in her professional capacity.

Instead, the Versailles education authority has brought two charges entirely unrelated to her teaching duties. First, officials claim she failed to request permission from the district to work as a commentator on the debate program “Les Grandes Gueules” on RMC radio, where she has appeared as a columnist since 2019. Second, they cite comments she made on that program on April 8, 2024, regarding an assault two days earlier at a hospital in the Vendée region, where a stretcher-bearer was seriously injured by members of the traveler community. Lefebvre stated on air that these individuals did not possess the codes of a civilized society.

Legal Protections Ignored

According to Causeur, when teachers express personal and original opinions on societal questions or current events on radio broadcasts, both European and French jurisprudence, including precedents from the national education ethics council, is clear: such expression constitutes intellectual work protected by free speech laws, just like press columns and book publications. Other teachers, including Fatima Ait-Bounoua, Benjamin Amar, and Jean-Loup Bonnamy, regularly appear on RMC without seeking special authorization.

The authorization process Lefebvre is accused of bypassing applies only to civil servants with lucrative activities outside their primary administration, specifically excluding intellectual works. It remains unclear whether teachers who collaborate with public broadcasting programs submit to this administrative procedure.

Double Jeopardy by Bureaucracy

The comments at issue have already been prosecuted. On April 15, the 17th criminal chamber of the Paris tribunal convicted Lefebvre of public insult and fined her 1,000 euros. She has appealed that decision. The education district now seeks to impose additional penalties for the same remarks under the elastic principle of duty of reserve, a concept necessarily subject to interpretation.

The prosecution file assembled by the district attempts to demonstrate that the recent trial damages the reputation of the national education system. The document compiles outraged reactions from social media as evidence. Among the exhibits is a tweet from April 15 by Danièle Obono, a representative from the far-left France Unbowed party, which falsely claims that the Bolloré empire is directly involved in the matter. In fact, RMC belongs not to the Breton businessman but to the Saadé family, owners of the shipping company CMA-CGM.

Partisan Warfare

The case raises troubling questions about institutional reputation. An education system already perceived by many as a partisan stronghold now appears to be manifesting authoritarian impulses by adopting talking points manufactured by the extreme left, complete with demonstrable falsehoods, and targeting one of its own employees for ideological reasons rather than professional misconduct.

The disciplinary commission hearing Lefebvre’s case consists of equal parts administrative representatives and personnel representatives. The outcome will determine whether a teacher with an unblemished professional record can be punished or dismissed for exercising free speech rights in a non-academic context, particularly after already facing legal consequences for the same remarks.

With information from Causeur

A French teacher faces dismissal for radio comments made two years ago that were already adjudicated in court, raising concerns about double jeopardy in the education system.

[122
7049,55,141,7051,7053,7052,7050
137
post-6933","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-barbara-lefebvre","tag-france","tag-free-speech","tag-french-education-system","tag-ile-de-france","tag-teacher-dismissal","tag-versailles","nfg_topic-culture-wars
["GET
