The suspension follows a complaint filed by Corporate Europe Observatory, a left-wing activist organization bankrolled by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation and the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, according to Brussels Signal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

MCC Brussels<\/strong>, one of the few right-leaning organizations operating in Brussels’ overwhelmingly progressive policy community, announced it will appeal the decision, which was communicated late on Friday, June 12.<\/p>\n

Complaint Based on Technicalities, Not Substance<\/h2>\n

Corporate Europe Observatory lodged its formal complaint in February 2025, alleging that MCC Brussels improperly used a “newly formed entity” designation in its transparency registration despite having operated since late 2022 and filed financial statements with Belgian authorities.<\/p>\n

The activist group, which campaigns against what it labels “far-right influence” in European policymaking, also criticized MCC Brussels for its involvement in debates surrounding farmers’ protests and climate policy, as well as its connection to the Budapest-based Mathias Corvinus Collegium, which receives Hungarian state-linked funding.<\/p>\n

Notably, the original complaint made no mention of the grounds ultimately cited for suspension, Brussels Signal<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

EU Targets “Single Registration Principle”<\/h2>\n

After more than a year of correspondence and investigation, the Transparency Register Secretariat based its suspension on the “single registration principle,” a guideline encouraging organizations with operations across multiple countries to maintain one unified registration rather than separate entries.<\/p>\n

MCC Brussels maintains it operates as an independent Belgian legal entity with full editorial and operational autonomy from its Hungarian parent organization. The Brussels office states that all its funding comes through a grant from the Hungarian foundation and that it has registered no lobbying meetings with EU institutions during the period in question.<\/p>\n

Selective Enforcement Alleged<\/h2>\n

In a detailed response, MCC Brussels rejected the suspension as grounded in a “disputed interpretation” of registration rules rather than any actual violation involving hidden lobbying, undisclosed meetings, financial impropriety, or code of conduct breaches.<\/p>\n

The organization pointed to what it described as inconsistent rule application, citing organizations linked to the World Wide Fund for Nature that maintain multiple active registrations despite comparable network structures.<\/p>\n

MCC Brussels emphasized that Corporate Europe Observatory’s original complaint extended well beyond technical transparency concerns, directly attacking the think tank’s political orientation, public events, and influence in policy debates.<\/p>\n

Conservative Voice Under Pressure<\/h2>\n

The suspension represents the latest in a series of administrative and political obstacles faced by conservative organizations attempting to operate in Brussels. MCC Brussels has established itself as a rare counterweight to the predominantly left-leaning think tank ecosystem that shapes EU policy discussions.<\/p>\n

The organization has been particularly active in challenging the prevailing consensus on climate regulation and agricultural policy, areas where EU institutions have faced growing public resistance across member states.<\/p>\n

With MCC Brussels vowing to appeal, the case will test whether the EU’s transparency mechanisms are applied evenhandedly or serve as tools to exclude ideologically disfavored voices from Brussels policy debates.<\/p>\n
