According to New York Post<\/em>, when the mayor presented his preliminary racial equity initiative in April, the comprehensive blueprint focused on equal outcomes across schools, courtrooms, and correctional facilities while entirely sidestepping the foundational institution where life outcomes begin\u2014the family home.<\/p>\n

This omission appears intentional rather than accidental. Progressive policymakers routinely apply equity standards to every public institution while refusing to acknowledge disparities in marriage rates and family structure that drive the very inequalities they claim to address.<\/p>\n

Delano Squires<\/strong>, director of the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Human Flourishing at The Heritage Foundation, reveals that nearly 70 percent of black children nationally are born to unmarried parents. This non-marital birth rate vastly exceeds rates for white Americans at 27 percent, Asian Americans at 12 percent, and Hispanic Americans at 54 percent.<\/p>\n

New York City’s own data underscores the crisis. In 2023, 75 percent of African American babies born in the city were born outside of marriage\u2014nearly double the citywide average.<\/p>\n

Marriage Collapse Reshapes Black America<\/h2>\n

The disparities extend beyond birth statistics. Half of all black children live with a single parent, as New York Post<\/em> reports. Only 28 percent of African American households consist of married couples, compared to the national average of nearly 50 percent.<\/p>\n

These figures represent a dramatic reversal from historical norms. In 1965, approximately 60 percent of black adults were married. Today, that figure has plummeted to just 35 percent\u2014a decline of more than 40 percent in six decades.<\/p>\n

The data reveals an uncomfortable reality: the married, two-parent household has shifted from the standard to the exception in black communities across America.<\/p>\n

Economic Security Tracks Marriage Rates<\/h2>\n

The connection between family structure and economic outcomes is undeniable, yet consistently ignored by equity advocates. Mayor Mamdani’s vision promises that all families will achieve economic security and no child will grow up in poverty\u2014goals that remain unreachable when policymakers refuse to acknowledge how marriage affects household income.<\/p>\n

Asian American families report the highest median earnings at $121,700 alongside the highest marriage rate at 62 percent. White families follow with median income of $92,530 and a 53 percent marriage rate. Hispanic families earn $70,950 with a 47 percent marriage rate, while black families show $56,020 in median income with only 35 percent married.<\/p>\n

Critically, the median income for black married couples under 65 reaches $121,900\u2014higher than overall household income for all demographic groups. This statistic alone demonstrates the transformative economic impact of marriage within black communities.<\/p>\n

The poverty data reinforces this pattern. In 2024, only 5 percent of children in married-parent families lived below the poverty line, compared to 31 percent in single-mother households.<\/p>\n

Blueprint for Family Restoration<\/h2>\n

Squires’ new book, “The Vanishing Black Family,” outlines a comprehensive strategy to reverse these trends and rebuild the marriage culture that prevailed from the end of the Civil War through the Civil Rights era.<\/p>\n

Successful restoration requires black community leaders to take ownership of the crisis. Churches in the Deep South should provide marriage counseling for young couples. Black advertising firms should create nationwide campaigns celebrating family life. Historically black colleges and universities must produce research examining Gen Z attitudes toward dating and committed relationships.<\/p>\n

Policymakers across all backgrounds also bear responsibility. Mayors and elected officials should integrate family structure into data collection, policy analysis, program design, and public messaging.<\/p>\n

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg<\/strong> demonstrated effective action in 2013 with a media campaign to reduce teen pregnancy. The ads introduced young people to the “success sequence”\u2014complete high school, secure employment, and marry before having children\u2014which reduces poverty risk to nearly zero. Cities can incorporate this proven framework into K-12 education curricula.<\/p>\n

While racial equity messaging may provide the political leverage needed to convince progressives to prioritize family structure, the true objective transcends ideology: ensuring black children receive the same advantage all children deserve\u2014growing up in a loving, stable, secure home with a married mother and father.<\/p>\n
