The unrest erupted following the circulation of disturbing footage from Monday evening showing a man repeatedly stabbing another man’s neck in what witnesses described as an attempted beheading, according to Breitbart News<\/em>. The horrific attack reignited long-simmering tensions over mass migration in Northern Ireland, which has previously experienced significant anti-immigration demonstrations.<\/p>\n

Police confirmed Tuesday morning that they had arrested a man in his 30s from Sudan who had been granted leave to remain status by the UK Home Office in 2023. The suspect had travelled through Paris and Dublin before entering British territory via the soft open border with the Irish Republic.<\/p>\n

Multiple protests took place across Belfast in response to the alleged attempted murder, with several deteriorating into scenes of violent disorder. Rioters set fire to numerous vehicles including a city bus and at least one police car, the Belfast Telegraph<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n

In the Cloughfern area, demonstrators reportedly hurled petrol bombs at police officers. Separately, residents in East Belfast were forced to flee their homes after properties caught fire during the disturbances.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill<\/strong> appealed for calm amid the chaos, condemning what she characterized as thuggery divorced from legitimate community concerns. She described the original stabbing attack as heinous and wrong, but warned against dangerous attempts to exploit the incident to target innocent people.<\/p>\n

The violence comes exactly one year after similar anti-migrant riots erupted across Northern Ireland following charges against Roma migrant teenagers for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Ballymena. Those disturbances lasted multiple days and reportedly forced several families of Romanian and Bulgarian heritage to leave the area after their homes were targeted in suspected arson attacks.<\/p>\n

Before Tuesday’s violent escalation, Jim Allister<\/strong>, leader of the conservative Traditional Unionist Voice party, urged Belfast residents not to fall into the trap of diverting attention from what he characterized as the consequences of open borders by engaging in violence.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging that people have a right to be angry over the attack and the imposition of an alien culture against their will, the MP warned that violent responses would only give Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer an excuse to dismiss legitimate concerns by focusing on right-wing extremism rather than addressing the root causes of public anger.<\/p>\n
