All five Astute-class submarines\u2014HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious, and Anson\u2014are docked for maintenance or technical issues as of June 8, 2026. A sixth vessel, HMS Agamemnon, has been officially commissioned but remains in the testing phase and is not yet operational.<\/p>\n
The vessels are undergoing various levels of planned maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. Significant delays have been caused by chronic shortages of skilled personnel, limited dockyard capacity at Devonport, and industrial bottlenecks that have plagued the British submarine industrial base for years.<\/p>\n
The situation raises serious concerns about Britain’s naval readiness. The Astute-class boats are responsible for protecting the Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines that carry Britain’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. They also conduct intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare, and special operations in high-threat areas including the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on individual submarine operations but confirmed it is working on a submarine maintenance recovery plan to improve availability.<\/p>\n
Senior naval figures have privately described the current state as unacceptable and very worrying, particularly given heightened Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic. Former First Sea Lord Admiral Lord West<\/strong> called the situation a real embarrassment for a country that aspires to be a leading naval power.<\/p>\n The crisis exposes long-standing problems in the UK’s submarine industrial base, including skills shortages, over-reliance on a single deep-maintenance facility at Devonport, and the enormous complexity of maintaining nuclear-powered vessels.<\/p>\n Defence analysts warn that prolonged low availability undermines deterrence and leaves critical gaps in Britain’s underwater capabilities at a time of growing global tension. The Vanguard-class submarines that carry Trident ballistic missiles\u2014the backbone of the UK’s nuclear deterrent\u2014depend critically on protection from these attack submarines.<\/p>\n The Royal Navy is now racing to return at least three Astute-class boats to high readiness by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n The vulnerability of remote territories such as the Chagos Islands, including the strategically vital Diego Garcia base, was a major factor in the controversial decision to hand sovereignty to Mauritius. Sustaining a credible long-term defence presence without sufficient submarines has become increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n
