The approach includes social ostracism of AfD members, equating the party with National Socialist organizations, and calls for an outright ban to restore what critics call “our democracy.”

Until such a ban materializes, coalition governments stretching from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) all the way to the far left have been deemed necessary to prevent AfD-led governance at any cost. Some voices have even suggested mass demonstrations or more extreme measures should the AfD take power despite electoral victories.

Yet pollsters failed to anticipate the AfD’s ascent to become Germany’s most popular party in multiple regions. The “firewall” approach has violated core principles of pluralistic democracy and transformed what was a liberal political culture forty years ago into something markedly less free, the outlet reports.

Ihrr solltet euch schnell ein neues zu Hause suchen. No one forced the SPD to alienate its working-class base and drive those voters toward the AfD. Similarly, the CDU chose to ignore the strategic warning from Franz Josef Strauß that the party must never allow a voter-legitimized force to emerge to the right of the Christian Social Union and Christian Democrats.

Intellectual laziness, self-satisfaction, and fear of left-green dominated media drove the Union to first disdain and then drive away its conservative and right-leaning members over many years, according to Junge Freiheit. Pollsters provided false reassurance, claiming the voter majority occupied the political center and that the Union need only partner with Greens or Social Democrats to retain permanent power.

The possibility of dynamic growth at the right end of the “political bell curve” leading to a two-peaked opinion distribution with substantial left and right blocs was dismissed as highly unlikely. Yet such polarization has now materialized in reality.

This division is only superficially concealed by lumping the Greens, SPD, and Union together as “the center.” Germany’s chancellor seeks reform majorities exclusively within this constructed middle ground. What has emerged instead resembles a two-party system: the AfD versus AfD opponents.

Majority Seeks Center-Right Governance

Establishment politicians attempt to justify this arrangement by labeling the AfD as right-wing extremist while presenting most AfD opponents as the “democratic center.” The Left Party, when needed as a coalition partner, is conveniently declared centrist as well.

Large segments of the electorate refuse to accept this semantic manipulation. The majority still considers itself centrist but rejects continuation of center-left policies whose consequences have proven catastrophic in areas including migration and integration, economic and innovation strength, and the education system.

For the coming years, most voters desire center-right policies of the kind that proved highly successful in the postwar period and after German reunification. Because the Union refuses to pursue renewed center-right politics and cannot do so within alliances with the SPD or Greens, a growing share of the electorate votes for the AfD as a corrective.

Strategic Warnings Ignored for Over a Decade

Some observers saw this development coming long ago. More than a decade ago, they advised the Union to address the problems with which PEGIDA and the AfD successfully mobilized support. Such counsel was dismissed as a politically reprehensible “shifting of the boundaries of acceptable discourse.”

Later, commentators urged the Union to prevent the AfD’s slide into right-wing demagogy by giving “AfD realists” internal party advantages over “AfD fundamentalists” through the prospect of center-right policy cooperation with the Union. This too was condemned as “fraternizing with enemies of our democracy.”

Analysts now explain to the Union that categorical rejection of any cooperation with the AfD creates ongoing vulnerability to blackmail by the SPD or Greens, and this dynamic drives ever more former Union and SPD voters to the AfD. Patterns of election results and voter migration make this undeniable. Yet because the message proves unwelcome, anger is simply directed at the messenger.

Firewall Strategy Enables Left-Wing Extortion

Too few grasp that politics should not solely serve as a stage for self-gratifying role-play exploring personal feelings and populist devotion. Politics more closely resembles a strategic game like chess, where opening moves determine long-term outcomes.

The firewall has made the Union perpetually subject to pressure from coalition partners further left, ensuring continued policy drift away from what most German voters actually want. What was intended as good has produced catastrophically bad results, and the consequences are now playing out at the ballot box with mathematical precision.

With information from Junge Freiheit

Germany’s conservative opposition is losing support as its “firewall” strategy of isolating the populist AfD backfires, driving former supporters to the very party it sought to marginalize.

[122
9,34,4583,5495,5494,25
134
post-5028","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-afd","tag-cdu","tag-conservative-opposition","tag-electoral-losses","tag-firewall-strategy","tag-germany","nfg_topic-europe
["GET
