The graphic was placed alongside the June 19 holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

Superintendent Ruth Turner said students, families, staff and community members who saw the menu were hurt, disappointed and offended by the placement of watermelon imagery in connection with Juneteenth.

The district leader characterized the graphic as inappropriate, insensitive and inconsistent with the values of Montclair Public Schools. Turner added that the association between the image and the historic holiday was offensive and unacceptable.

School administrators acted swiftly after learning of the controversy, contacting senior Sodexo leadership to demand immediate accountability and corrective action. The food-service company was ordered to remove the image and distribute a revised June menu.

Montclair Public Schools said it would work with Sodexo to review internal procedures and expectations for all materials distributed to students and families. Turner emphasized that all materials shared with the school community must be reviewed through a lens of cultural awareness, sensitivity and respect.

The controversy erupted just months after Sodexo assumed food-service operations across the district. The company began operating in Montclair schools on January 5, with families promised fresh ingredients, nutrition-focused meals and culturally responsive menu options.

The watermelon image drew immediate scrutiny because of the fruit’s troubling history in American racial stereotypes. Turner explicitly referenced the historic use of watermelon imagery to demean black Americans, making the menu graphic particularly problematic when paired with a holiday celebrating black freedom and emancipation.

It remains unclear who designed the graphic, who approved it for distribution, or whether it appeared districtwide or only on certain school menus. The district credited community members with bringing the matter to administrators’ attention, though the identity of those who first noticed the image has not been disclosed.

Sodexo issued an apology after the controversy became public. The company said it deeply regretted the use of culturally insensitive imagery on the June menu and claimed the intent had been to highlight a seasonal item served regularly during spring.

The food-service provider said it takes the situation very seriously and pledged to reinforce its service standards, operating procedures and approval processes. However, Sodexo has not publicly identified the employee or employees responsible for creating or approving the graphic. No disciplinary action has been announced.

With information from New York Post

A New Jersey school district launched an investigation after its food-service contractor Sodexo featured watermelon imagery on a Juneteenth cafeteria menu, prompting outcry over racial insensitivity.

[122
5479,5477,657,5480,5482,5481,5478
137
post-5010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-juneteenth","tag-montclair","tag-new-jersey","tag-racial-insensitivity","tag-ruth-turner","tag-school-cafeteria","tag-sodexo","nfg_topic-culture-wars
["GET
