Yet his delivery was anything but tired. One major German newspaper characterized his style as featuring sentences that were “short and sharp, with a pistol shot between each period.”

Double Standards in German Politics

The columnist expressed particular frustration with what he sees as glaring double standards in German media and politics. When an AfD politician’s car is set on fire, it receives minimal coverage, Martenstein observed, while Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck being delayed a few minutes from disembarking a ferry becomes treated as a state affair.

Martenstein emphasized to Junge Freiheit that he was not defending the AfD itself, but rather opposing efforts to ban a party that receives over 20 percent support in western Germany and 35 to 40 percent in the east. He compared accusations that he was defending the AfD to claiming someone who opposes the death penalty must therefore support murder.

Success, Not Radicalism, Drives Ban Debate

The journalist pointed out that the foundation for the ban debate is the party’s electoral success rather than particularly radical positions. He noted that parties standing further right than the AfD, such as Die Heimat (formerly the NPD) and Der Dritte Weg, face no ban discussion because they remain electorally unsuccessful.

During his speech, Martenstein delivered stark warnings that the “fight against the right” has become “a fight against democracy” itself, telling ban advocates they are “opponents of democracy” who would “transform it into an authoritarian regime.” He told Junge Freiheit he intentionally pushed to the pain threshold, believing other speakers against an AfD ban had been surprisingly defensive.

Tense Atmosphere at Theater Event

Martenstein described a tense silence during his remarks that was clearly unfriendly, with some muted interjections and booing at the end, though he was not shouted down as event rules prohibited such disruption. YouTuber Feroz Khan, who also spoke at the event, reported to Junge Freiheit an even more hostile atmosphere, prompting him to leave the theater quickly for security reasons.

After his speech, Martenstein was verbally confronted by an “apparently already tanked” theater employee, leading him to withdraw as well, though director Milo Rau later invited him for prosecco in what Martenstein described as a gracious gesture.

Forthcoming Book to Detail Khan Controversy

The impact of Martenstein’s appearance has led Munich-based Langen-Müller publishing house to commission a book about the experience, scheduled for release this fall. A central focus will be the treatment of Khan, whose parents fled Pakistan as members of the Ahmadiyya community, an Islamic sect advocating tolerance, free speech, and equal rights for women.

Khan represents immigrants who fled the very radical Islam now confronting them in Germany, yet faces accusations of “Islamophobia,” Martenstein noted. Hamburg attorney Gabriele Heinecke, representing the prosecution at the theatrical trial, dismissed Khan’s statement that Germany experienced approximately 29,000 knife attacks in 2024 as “total bullshit.”

Martenstein told Junge Freiheit that Khan was completely correct, as this figure from police crime statistics appears widely, including on the website of the public broadcaster ZDF. He characterized Heinecke’s denial as an apparent lie designed to publicly destroy Khan’s credibility, suggesting her attitude conveyed “I am power, and you are just a poor sausage.”

The controversy has transformed the longtime columnist into what many German citizens now view as a freedom hero, though Martenstein himself expressed embarrassment at such characterizations, insisting no heroism was required to speak basic truths about democratic principles.

With information from Junge Freiheit

German columnist Harald Martenstein gained nearly 1.5 million YouTube views and a book deal after delivering a powerful defense of democratic principles against plans to ban the AfD party.

[122
9,141,25,5313,5338,1692,5339
134
post-4900","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-afd","tag-free-speech","tag-germany","tag-hamburg","tag-harald-martenstein","tag-spd","tag-thalia-theater","nfg_topic-europe
["GET
