Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska<\/strong> activated the operation’s main Command Centre at the Canillas police complex in Madrid on Friday, just 24 hours before the Pope’s scheduled arrival on June 6, 2026.<\/p>\n

The massive security operation will draw primarily on the National Police and Guardia Civil, supplemented by Catalonia’s Mossos d’Esquadra, the Canary Islands’ regional force, and local police units in each city hosting papal events.<\/p>\n

Over One Million Expected at Madrid Mass<\/h2>\n

Grande-Marlaska outlined that the scale of the papal visit is unprecedented, with crowd estimates exceeding 400,000 for a vigil at Madrid’s Plaza de Lima on June 6 and more than one million faithful expected to attend Mass at Plaza de Cibeles on June 7.<\/p>\n

The critical phase of the special security plan activates at midnight on June 6 and will remain in force until June 12 when the visit concludes. Security priorities include event venues, the Pope’s accommodations, transit corridors, emergency infrastructure, and critical facilities.<\/p>\n

Tailored Security Windows Across Spain<\/h2>\n

As Brussels Signal<\/em> reports, the security plan has been customized for each location on the papal itinerary. Madrid will be under heightened security from midnight June 6 through 1:30pm on June 9. Barcelona follows from 7am on June 9 until 8am on June 11. The Canary Islands phase runs from midnight June 11 until the papal aircraft exits Spanish airspace on June 12.<\/p>\n

Throughout these windows, the operation will function at maximum alert level, coordinated with Spain’s anti-terrorism posture currently set at level 4, described as reinforced.<\/p>\n

Massive Deployment of Personnel and Equipment<\/h2>\n

The Interior Ministry confirmed that immediate papal security falls to the National Police, while the Guardia Civil, Mossos d’Esquadra, local forces, and Canary Islands police handle broader operational coverage. The Mossos alone will field more than 6,100 officers for the Barcelona segment.<\/p>\n

The deployment encompasses over 1,000 ground vehicles and 16 aircraft. Additional support comes from the Royal Household, the Prime Minister’s office, and the armed forces.<\/p>\n

Parallel command centres will operate in Barcelona, Las Palmas, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with coordination support from the Spanish Bishops’ Conference and Enaire, Spain’s air navigation authority.<\/p>\n

Madrid Activates Civil Protection Measures<\/h2>\n

The Community of Madrid has separately activated its Territorial Civil Protection Plan in alert phase for June 6-9, covering the Pope’s stay in the capital region.<\/p>\n

Madrid’s 112 Security and Emergencies Agency will maintain operational situation level 0\u2014the lowest of four levels with no assessed public risk\u2014while reinforcing daily staffing to handle anticipated surges in emergency calls from the mass influx of pilgrims and visitors.<\/p>\n

First Papal Visit in 15 Years<\/h2>\n

This apostolic journey marks the first papal visit to Spain since Pope Benedict XVI traveled there in 2011. Pope Leo XIV accepted invitations from King Felipe VI and the Spanish Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

The Pope is scheduled to land at Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas airport on the morning of June 6. He is expected to make history as the first pontiff to address the Spanish Parliament in a joint session of both chambers.<\/p>\n
