The president used social media to throw his support behind the Protect College Sports Act, championed by Senator Ted Cruz<\/strong> of Texas alongside Democratic Senators Maria Cantwell<\/strong> of Washington and Chris Coons<\/strong> of Delaware, according to Breitbart News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Trump warned that endless litigation and chaotic court decisions have stripped away all meaningful constraints on college athletics, putting most universities on a path toward financial ruin. He stressed that women’s sports and Olympic programs face the gravest danger from what he termed a catastrophic situation.<\/p>\n

The president noted that college sports have morphed into professional sports without any governing framework, an outcome nobody desires. He recounted conversations with university presidents, conference commissioners, student-athletes, coaches, and athletic directors who described the crisis as an unstoppable freight train causing schools to hemorrhage hundreds of millions of dollars annually.<\/p>\n

As Breitbart News<\/em> previously reported, the earlier SCORE Act failed to advance in the U.S. House of Representatives, making the Protect College Sports Act the latest attempt to bring order to a chaotic landscape.<\/p>\n

The Cruz-Cantwell legislation targets several factors driving instability in college athletics. Most notably, the so-called Lane Kiffin Rule would prevent coaches from abandoning their teams mid-season. The bill also restricts the number of transfers student-athletes can make during their eligibility window.<\/p>\n

The measure gained additional momentum Wednesday when legendary college football coach Nick Saban<\/strong> testified before the Senate Commerce Committee, characterizing the name, image, and likeness landscape as an arms race to the bottom.<\/p>\n

Saban argued that success has become purely a function of spending power, creating a destructive cycle where institutions must spend exorbitantly to win or risk losing fan bases and revenue streams entirely.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Paul Finebaum<\/strong>, Saban articulated broader concerns about the health of college athletics beyond football and basketball. He highlighted the 22 non-revenue sports that provide opportunities to thousands of student-athletes, noting that American universities trained 85 percent of U.S. Olympians for the most recent Games.<\/p>\n

The United States remains unique globally in relying on its university system to develop Olympic athletes, Saban observed. He warned that financial imbalances between revenue and non-revenue sports will force institutions to eliminate programs, pointing to Arkansas dropping tennis as precisely the outcome reformers hope to prevent.<\/p>\n

The two dominant power conferences in college sports, the SEC and Big Ten, have already declared the legislation insufficient, claiming it fails to meaningfully preempt conflicting state laws or provide adequate enforcement mechanisms for consistent rules.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, President Trump views the Protect College Sports Act as potentially the final opportunity to impose rules and structure on what has devolved into a lawless athletic environment. He called on both chambers of Congress to unite and pass legislation he can sign this summer, incorporating input from the House and Senate.
