The café, founded by his congregation in 2023, had become the target of a coordinated campaign by left-wing extremists, according to Junge Freiheit.

Just one day before the city’s clarification, Wagner expressed frustration to the Idea news agency that there had been no political recognition that the attacks targeted religious freedom. That stance shifted markedly this week when a Leipzig city spokesman confirmed to Junge Freiheit on Thursday that the attacks indeed violated constitutionally protected religious liberty.

City Reverses Position on Religious Freedom Violation

The spokesman declared the numerous attacks “shameful and intolerable,” adding that they represent assaults on religious freedom guaranteed by Germany’s Basic Law. This marks a significant departure from the city’s previous position articulated by the public order department, headed by Left Party politician Heiko Rosenthal.

While that department had condemned the attacks, it simultaneously claimed that the “fundamental exercise of religious freedom” in Leipzig was not endangered and that the specific attacks were “not directly aimed at the practice of religion.” The department justified this assessment partly by noting that no prayer rooms were targeted.

The new acknowledgment aligns with the perpetrators’ own statements. In a 2023 manifesto posted on the left-wing extremist platform Indymedia, attackers explicitly stated they targeted the café because it was operated by “fundamentalist” and “arch-conservative” Christians. They also accused the establishment of representing “queer hostility and misogyny.”

Political Leaders Walk Fine Line

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung, a Social Democrat, had previously avoided characterizing the attacks as assaults on religious freedom during a February city council session. While calling the incidents “unbearable” and “criminal machinations,” Jung defended the public order department’s statements, arguing that as an administrative body it should not express political opinions on such matters.

CDU city councilor Lucas Schopphoven questioned why the department would “so vehemently” exclude a religious connection if it claimed not to be making evaluations at all.

BSW Denounces “Authoritarian Mindset”

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) took the strongest stance against both the attacks and the city’s initial response. Eric Recke, BSW faction leader in the city council and state parliament member, told Junge Freiheit on Wednesday that the city’s earlier positioning constituted “a scandal.”

Recke identified in the Indymedia statement “an open attack on a part of worldwide Christianity.” He noted that the understanding of marriage targeted by left-wing extremists represents “an elementary component” of religious practice. The attacks, he said, reveal an “authoritarian mindset” and amount to “a successful campaign of attrition against Christian business owners.”

The Zeal Church does not perform same-sex marriages but, unlike some other free churches, permits women to preach—a detail that undercuts blanket accusations of conservatism.

Conservative Lawmaker Criticizes City Response

CDU federal parliamentarian Jens Lehmann from Leipzig condemned the attacks “in the strongest terms” while telling Junge Freiheit he shares the city’s assessment that there are no indications of fundamental impairment of Christian religious practice in Leipzig generally. However, he emphasized that precisely for that reason, authorities should have interest in examining specific problem cases and taking action against them.

Lehmann said he regretted the café’s closure as “a loss for the city.”

Extremist Stronghold Context

The Saxon Interior Ministry in Dresden declined to comment substantively on the matter when contacted by Junge Freiheit, confirming only that multiple politically motivated left-wing crimes connected to the café had been registered.

Leipzig, particularly its Connewitz district, is widely regarded as a stronghold of the left-wing extremist scene in Saxony and beyond. Café Stay was located in an electoral district where Left Party politician Nam Duy Nguyen won a direct mandate in the 2024 state elections.

The closure represents a tangible victory for extremists who openly declared their intention to shut down a Christian establishment because of its religious convictions—a campaign that succeeded despite operating in full public view with explicit statements of ideological motivation.

With information from Junge Freiheit

A Christian café in Leipzig closed after 26 left-wing extremist attacks, with city officials reversing their position to acknowledge the campaign violated religious freedom.

[122
5242,25,3605,953,4186,5240,5241
136
post-4835","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-cafe-stay","tag-germany","tag-left-wing-extremism","tag-leipzig","tag-religious-freedom","tag-rene-wagner","tag-zeal-church","nfg_topic-christianity
["GET
