Instead, Portugal and Austria were chosen to represent the “Western Europe and Others” regional group on the powerful UN body.

The result marks a significant rupture with established practice. Since German reunification, the Federal Republic had successfully applied for a two-year Security Council term every eight years without exception. That winning streak has now come to an end, ensuring Germany will not hold a seat on the UN’s most powerful body during 2027 and 2028.

Russia Accuses Germany of War Complicity

The failed bid comes amid mounting international criticism of German foreign policy on multiple fronts. Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia recently told the UN that Berlin’s military activities warrant special scrutiny, accusing Germany of participating in genocide through weapons deliveries to Israel. Nebenzia also assigned Germany partial responsibility for the Ukraine conflict, declaring that the two wars are connected through one nation: Germany, which he noted had started two world wars.

Germany’s stance on Israel has alienated actors on both sides of the Middle East debate. The Berlin government repeatedly abstained on votes concerning anti-Israel resolutions at the UN, a position that drew fire from supporters of the Jewish state who saw insufficient solidarity, while others condemned Germany for ignoring Palestinian suffering. The approach succeeded in antagonizing both camps.

Merz’s Wavering Signals on Iran Conflict

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democrats has compounded Germany’s credibility problems with inconsistent messaging on the Iran conflict. The German leader has issued contradictory statements on a near-weekly basis, according to Junge Freiheit, first characterizing the US-Israeli strikes as justified, then calling them a mistake, and subsequently claiming the Americans had been humiliated by Iran. The zigzagging has left the international community confused about Germany’s actual position and raised fundamental questions about Berlin’s reliability as a partner.

Financial Contributions Not Enough

Germany had centered its campaign on the fact that it is the second-largest financial contributor to the United Nations. That argument evidently failed to persuade enough member states. The Security Council consists of 15 nations: five permanent members with veto power—the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia—and ten rotating seats distributed by regional quota for two-year terms, with five positions renewed annually.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, also of the CDU, appears to have recognized the gravity of the situation late in the campaign. He recently traveled as far as the small Pacific Kingdom of Tonga in an effort to secure votes for Germany’s candidacy. The defeat represents another severe setback for the black-red coalition government led by Merz and is expected to trigger domestic political criticism as well.

With information from Junge Freiheit

Germany lost its bid for a UN Security Council seat, receiving only 104 of 193 votes instead of the required 127, ending its post-reunification tradition of winning a seat every eight years.

[122
571,5055,25,644,5053,204
135
post-4645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-austria","tag-diplomatic-defeat","tag-germany","tag-portugal","tag-security-council","tag-united-nations","nfg_topic-world
["GET
