The restrictions had been put in place Sunday to manage escalating confrontations at the facility.

In a public statement, Baraka said the curfew was being lifted to restore full expression of Americans’ right to free speech and peaceful assembly. He expressed confidence in protesters’ ability to demonstrate appropriately on behalf of those detained by ICE and held by the for-profit Geo Group.

The mayor also indicated that a security cordon around the facility would be removed, allowing demonstrators to gather directly outside Delaney Hall rather than being confined to locations down the street.

Arrests and Allegations of Violence

The decision follows reports that protesters from across the country, including as far as Portland, Oregon, have traveled to Newark and engaged in violent behavior. Federal law enforcement officers were allegedly bitten by demonstrators, and at least one agent reportedly received death threats directed at him and his family.

During the Sunday and Monday enforcement of the curfew, Newark Police arrested 61 individuals on various charges including failure to disperse, curfew violations, and resisting arrest, as New York Post reports.

Police Control Shifts Back to Newark

Control of the area has been returned to Newark Police from New Jersey State Police after Mayor Baraka criticized the state force’s weekend tactics as aggressive, unnecessary, and potentially unconstitutional.

Following the mayor’s announcement, anti-ICE demonstrators celebrated and marched back toward the detention center as police removed barricades. Video footage captured crowds chanting that united people cannot be defeated.

Ongoing Detention Facility Controversy

Delaney Hall has been the center of sustained protests since at least May 22, when top Democratic officials including New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill raised concerns about allegedly inhumane conditions and limited visitation hours at the facility.

Detainees inside have reportedly launched a hunger strike over the conditions. The Trump administration has consistently responded that living standards at Delaney Hall exceed those found in most United States prisons.

With information from New York Post

Newark’s Democratic mayor lifted a three-day curfew around an immigration detention center following violent clashes between anti-ICE protesters and law enforcement that resulted in 61 arrests.

[122
3022,4130,3021,3023,657,3020,4369,278
135
post-4564","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-delaney-hall","tag-geo-group","tag-ice","tag-immigration-detention","tag-new-jersey","tag-newark","tag-ras-baraka","tag-usa","nfg_topic-world
["GET
